I happen to prefer the original sound, because I have always been tone-chasing a bonkers hyper-metal modded Marshall sound. However, the diagnostic assessment of tone, gain, and compression qualities was nuanced and accurate, and the changes made skillfully effective.

I'm glad someone else noticed the missing B+ dropper. So weird Ceriatone omitted it. I asked them about it years ago and he had no idea what I was talking about. In reality, my educated guess is they just copied a bad schematic they found online that didn't have that resistor included by accident. These amps are good platforms for modding, though. Tons of things you can do to improve the sound/feel.

@FourT6and22

@@KB_Joys Nah. I was being kind in my initial comment. They 100% just copied a DIY schematic that had some errors in it, like the missing 10K dropper. There is absolutely zero reason to omit it. It doesn't serve to intentionally keep the voltages high in that part of the circuit, especially since V1a plate is 470K, which drops the voltages much too low. And omitting the 10K dropper is silly because it couples the PI and V2 filtering, so why even bother installing a dual can filter cap in the preamp if you're going to leave out that decoupling resistor. Makes no sense. Ceriatone has started putting that resistor in the circuit in recent years and they've included it in the other Jose-style amps that share the same basic circuit like the Meshuggah copy and Atomica copy.

How in the world did I miss this video? My amp is a Chupa 100. I just got it in February so it’s the updated version. I love it! And like you, Nik is very helpful and a great guy that knows amps. When I checked the plate voltage on mine it was running at 468 volts. Anyway, great job on this amp! I have to run the Pussy Trimmer (hilarious name for a control) at no more than noon or 1 o’clock and the gain 1 control no more than noon and pulled out (focus) to tame the compression and the little fizz it has. But it sounds great! Can’t wait to set your Alta100 right next to it! Cheers Jason!
@HeadfirstAmps

They can be a little tricky to dial in because of the pussy trimmer. Most Marshalls, and hot rodded derivates, will have a 470k fixed resistor here, Ceriatone have the PT as a 1M audio taper pot, so maybe set at around 3pm would be equivalent.

I have to agree with Mike Foss and preferred it before the MOD!! After, the PI node was 377VDC?? Now it's too high! If the customer wanted "dark", why not add a 500p on top of the 100k of the cathode follower?? After all, this is known as the "Dark Mod"!! lol Does the customer want it like Jerry's, or just a dark amp?? Don't forget also, part of Jerry's tone is just using a guitar with Motor City pickups in it and a pot with NO capacitor on it! On the G&L Cantrell Rampage signature guitars, they use a 100pF cap in it, but Jerry's actual guitar does NOT have any cap, fyi!! 🙂 And yeah, Nik and Ceriatone has messed around with the spec of the Ceriatone. Although the Layout has 820R cathodes, I have never even seen one with that value, but have with both 1k and 2.7k on different amps, fyi!

@@eds4754 a VERY 'unknown' aspect of guitar construction is 'ring orientation'. That is the growth rings of the tree/wood used in guitar construction. Species, and weight are ALWAYS considered in mass production, but NEVER is the blanks ring orientation. If the wrong side looks aesthetically better, then its used (period) as the 'top/face' of the guitar.... this is TOTALLY wrong. You want the ring pattern's outer growth facing the top of your guitar, not the bottom. Open book matched is prime. Srv and Rory Galligher ( rip to them) as ex. Have the right ring orientation on their guitars. Seems 'ol Jerry has one that is as good or BETTER than his original Rampage. IT'S the growth ring orientation......you strike a tree and it absorbs the energy......then releases it ( released force/energy, echo, vibration)

You mention running a 220K from input of gain pot to ground. What difference do bigger or smaller resitors make? I added a 100k and it made the amp quite a bit tighter and reduced the gain and although it's good I feel there is probably a sweet spot to be found with experimantation. If I used a smaller resistor would there be less of a gain loss or is there less of a gain loss with a bigger resistor. I have a Chupa 50 watt which I am slowly modding. I did the 100PF Fizz cap between the PI caps and literall had a WTF moment. big improvement in tone.. It's very good of you to share info like this. I would love to be able to add this resistor change to a switch so it's in and out of circuit but unfortunately I'm pretty much a painting by numbers type idiot so that restricts me quite a bit.

Isn’t the Yeti supposed to be voiced in that it, unlike the Chupacabra, has that “punch through the upper midrange” that you spoke about early in the video? Almost same, but voiced more toward the upper midrange (which to me sound more what I hear from an unmodded Jmp or JCM, for example - that characteristic Marshall mid grunt that nothing else can seem to replicate). I’m trying to pick one as I write this. Been leaning towards the Yeti. More “traditional” Marshall sound to my ears(?) Ideally I’d have a Plexi, JMP and JCM with Jose and Cameron switches. Vai DLR era pull mod too. Tone covering requirements: -Warren DeMartini/Robbin Crosby, -Slash -Jake E Lee -EVH -Jerry Cantrell -Brent Hinds/Bill Kelliher I’m forever in love with Mids. Use Greenbacks and Duncan JB/RTM/Distortion pickups. What could you do for me?

I didn’t, I was trying to keep the preamp reasonably lean as there was a bit too much mud and gain. That clip of Jerry, you can hear Dave’s amp, there is not that much gain. It’s quite clean actually which is why it sounds so huge.

What is the effect on tone by not having the 10K dropping resistor between cathode follower, and PI caps? I'm confused as to why they omitted this resistor in some designs, but included an on others. I assume it absorbs some oscillations. Thanks.

@@HeadfirstAmps I have the King Kong, witch is a two channel similar design. It does have the dropping resistor, and a split cap (50/50uf) on top of the board, rather than the large can. A lot of what I'm seeing, is the use of common components, and the value changes to avoid appearing as if they copied other amp designs. Mine also has a 330K ohm plate load resistor on V1A. 3K ohm on the cathode. I'm debating swapping them for, possibly 220K/800 ohm. I'm not sure.
