Can you do a video giving a real quick run down on how to read a seismograph and show what's the difference between tectonic and harmonic tremors?

The mountain top of Cerro Machin is a huge cap over the upper chamber and since there is evidence that the upper chamber is at least receiving energy from the deeper chamber, aren't we seeing an increase in pressure on the cap that will eventually lead to an explosion? If that's the case, how will we know when its going to pop? In other words, given what we know about St. Helens and other explosive volcanoes, how good are we at predicting when they will pop? More importantly, what are the warning signs that the earthen cork is ready to fly out? Is it uplift? Cracking? More gas vents?

@@brianmckee3991 totally. if there is a concentrated region of uplift it likely indicates basalticandesite or either/or. while If it's broad and widespread with a lot of quakes to accompany the activity that means its might be mich more viscous and scilica enriched. more viscous magma like dacite possibly rhyolite, tho that's only determined when the eruption starts.

I have been trying to find information of the rock formations in which Herkimer Diamonds are found in. I know they are found primarily in Herkimer County, NY and the Mohawk River Valley, but have never found out whether or not the rocks it comes from are volcanic in nature.

Wikipedia has an article on it. The "diamonds" are quartz crystals that formed during the Carboniferous from water seeping into cavities in Cambrian dolomite. No volcanoes involved. How hard did you try to find out? It took me less time to get the info from Wikipedia than typing this comment did.

@@b.a.erlebacher1139 I saw that as well, but Wikipedia has a history of giving inaccurate or missing information. Who better to know than a geologist, yeah? Hence I asked my question. There are no stupid questions except the questions never asked.

@GeologyHub - how do you tell earthquakes are volcanic origin and not tectonic? is there a obvious marker, or is it specific to the volcano?

Tectonic earthquakes produced by faults such as the San Andreas fault usually have a primary or p wave and a secondary or a wave. The p wave goes ahead of the s wave and is faster then the s wave so there's several seconds between the two sets of waves. Volcanic earthquakes don't have that. One type of volcanic quake starts with strong shaking and trails of slowly. Another is a quick burst of shaking as if someone is tapping the rock with a hammer.

A bold prediction in the circumstances - I do hope you are right. If magma movement is heating the groundwater, does that not increase the likelihood of a phreatic eruption, always so hard to predict?

I have a question. Potassium can be derived from ash, so is a buildup of concentrated Potassium possible to buildup underground, eventually becoming highly reactive with water, if for some reason it was cutoff from water...causing an unexpected explosion....is that already a thing? Or already talked about or whatever? I was just brainsurfing... Water filtering down through ash over a large area and time depositing it underground areas where the water evaporates leaving potassium that builds up only to react violently when ground water suddenly gets intoduced???
@davidcranstone9044

I don't think that is possible. The potassium leaching out will be in the form of compounds ('salts') whereas it is metallic potassium that reacts so violently with water.

@davidcranstone9044 you know how there underground caverns?? Like a cave, with potassium rich water dripping through and perhaps this cave is hot, from underlying magma somewhere below, causing a more condensed form of these salts...thinking outside the norm, so to speak haha
