In the early '40s I lived near the railroad yard (by the ice plant). The locomotives were steam then. We kids loved to watch the engines switch cars around the yard. The engineers would let us climb up into the cab and talk with them. Later in 1950 or so we lived on 17th Ave near the silos. The train stopped to leave cars there very late at night. I would wake up and watch the engine out of our window. We kids would hike up the track clear to the sand pit at the end of the line to Felton. We climbed up into the sand cars to play in the sand! Trains went up to the sand pit often & to Davenport too. The Sun Tan Express came from the bay area and hundreds of people poured off of the train all along Beach St. The train didn't stop, just crept along. Same thing when it left in the evening. I got to see the round house in Watsonville a couple of times. I miss Santa Cruz in a way. When I went to Mission Hill Jr High I walked through the tunnel under Mission Hill on my way to school.

2600's paint sure hasn't lasted long this time, seems like it was just repainted a couple of years ago and is so faded now. Thanks for the video. For all the time I spent there I don't think I ever saw them work together, nice catch.

arnold894 not only that, but it's been missing the nose logo for some time now, and Al Smith's name under the cab numbers as well

I didn't know Al Smith was missing. I don't think they ever put the nose logo on since they painted last. I still remember the days when it was still in its Santa Fe Blue/Yellow paint. Several paint jobs since then:)

Thank you for your delightful videos. Do they run any steam locomotives beside the narrow gage at roaring camp?

Good video, but I would have liked to have heard them climbing the hill.
