As a long-time collector, I think the old-old label (first generation (2000 to 2003)) was the tightest CGC grading, ever. Those old-old labels command a premium in the market for keys. CGC then went through an inconsistent, but mostly soft grading period from 2004 or so to 2016. Then, in 2016, CGC got really tight again, and there has been no let up. BTW, CBCS is grading tightly also.

Very interesting! I've heard a lot of the opposite, but I can't speak on it myself. I've only own two pre-2016 CGC slabs. I have a Cap 100 that has the original blue labels from the early 2000s, graded at a 3.5 It has a long piece of tape along the spine, but no spine damage and the staples are completely intact. It has a 3/4 inch defect running across the top of the cover, but other than that, the rest of the book presents really clean with very minor flaws . I'm not to savvy on how they judge tape, but man would it be interesting to see what they would grade it now.

@JernosComicsPopCulture

@@angelvalle9963 Humbly disagree. It's presents much more like a 5.5 - 6.0, but of course the tape brings that down. I think it would all depend on how harsh they are about the tape, but in no way is it near a 2.0. If it came back a 2.0, or even a 2.5, I'd honestly never send a book to CGC ever again. I know CGC has their own "standards," but I've studied the Overstreet Guide to Grading and there is no way a piece of tape will knock down a book that is otherwise in the Fine range, all the way down in the 2's.

I completely agree about the change in grading standards. I have a number of slabs submitted myself from 3-4 years ago that would not get 9.8 and 9.6’s now. Now for the reason why, I think two-fold. The market loves and idolizes 9.8’s, so that grade has become the gold, flawless standard, so CGC has adjusted accordingly to only give flawless books a 9.8 grade. I bet it’s even harder now, outside of square bound books, to receive a 9.9. Secondly, CGC knows their slabs get a premium price compared to other companies, so CGC wants to make their 9.8’s even more rare and desirable. They don’t want to oversaturate the market, outside of modern books, of 9.8’s. By adhering to stricter standards, it makes their 9.8’s even worth more, which makes their company more desirable.

great vid and content! My issue with grading companies is I do not think they base grades on what flaws a book has, but more what the book is and who has sent it for grading. IMO they grade keys and grails WAY tougher than regular books. grading companies want you to continue to send books in, so they know you have to get value out of their service, but they also have to balance that with not giving every book a high grade to maintain credibility. plus, I have had large comic dealers and auction houses tell me NOT to send comics in for grading because they can do it and get higher grades based on their volume of submitting. This may be a sales pitch on their part but its still not a good look for the grading industry.

The problem with CGC right now - that no one is talking about - is not knowing what their new owner Blackstone is doing. Blackstone is a vulture capital firm with a long record of sucking companies dry to boost profit. Since the sale of CGC to Blackstone I've not seen one high grade comic come back with any grader's notes. I doubt their graders are putting the same attention to books they used to and their 2sets of graders looking at each book is nothing more than a rubber stamp.

It baffles me that people still value grades from CGC so highly when there’s clearly no consistency. It’s like trying to see how your diet is going when using a broken scale. Everybody cheers when the scale says you lost 12 pounds and then makes a whole slew of excuses when it says you gained 5. The grades should validate a book’s value, not inflate it.

We can all agree that there clearly is a huge difference between a grade 9.0 and 2.0. The inconsistencies with cgc occurs with grades that are close example 9.8 vs 9.6 or 9.4 vs 9.2 these ranges are so close to each other that it is almost indistinguishable leading to disagreements and controversies.
@Supertomscustoms
2 жыл бұрын
@@michaeltan4204 and yet the price between a 2.0 and a 9.0 is less than the difference between 9.0 and a 9.8. At those grades the evidence should be very clear and the grades should be very objective. They’re not debating how much a stain lowers the grade or how severe a subscription crease is. A spine tick is either there or it isn’t. But this is why CGC hides their grading standards. They know at those higher grades they can’t fall back on the “subjective” excuse and they don’t want to be held accountable.

I've had luck, after an early experiment (tired of exactly what you are describing), sending old holders into CCS for pressing, then directly to CGC. IMHO CCS doesn't do the best job pressing, and cleaning is out, but it seems like books that go through CCS DO get a higher grade more often than those sent in raw after careful pressing. I haven't tried this on grails of course, but I can see that it would make some sense that a company would lean toward better grades for those who did pressing through that company. Of course, with an almost 5 months fast track turnaround time (Plus grading), it's also extremely time consuming, so if you're in a hurry you're better going with a 3rd party or doing it yourself.
