I always love how they never took themselves seriously except for their amazing playing. I was lucky to have seen their beginning in D.C. as a high school senior and later saw many shows as an American University art student at the Red Fox Inn and the Cellar Door. Our heroes! They were the BEST.

Ginny, you have to be talking about the great Mike Aldridge. This is by far the best group of musicians, and singers, I have ever heard in my life. They were then, and they still are. I remember, though I don't remember the exact year, maybe 1992-93, when he (Mike Aldridge) was voted the best dobro player in bluegrass music, and there was a reason for that, it's because he was the best "period". I'm 60 yrs old, and this takes me back about 46 years ago when I first heard the original Seldom Scene or should I say "Act 1" , Mike Aldridge, John Duffy, Ben Eldridge, Tom Gray and John Starling. Sometimes I wonder if they ever really knew how much talent they actually had. I've shared this music with lots of friends along the way, and I've lost many of them as well, so you see, this music has a lot of meaning to me too. Just like old friends, these guys were the best. Thanks again, and may God bless you.

@@joeblanton1958 yes, only the last name is spelled "Auldridge", while people without the letter "U" might be distant relatives, our family has the letter "U" in it. He was my mom's younger brother, and my grandparents had 7 sons and 2 daughters. We are native Washingtonians, and the family moved to Kensington Maryland while Mike was still in school. They lived on Everrett Street just a few blocks off Connecticut Ave. His younger brother Dave, also departed, played with Cliff Waldron and the new shades of Grass, and both of them were included in the special album of the Smithsonian Bluegrass collection. Their brother Jack played piano and drums, and was in some of the music included in that collection. Our family is very musical and artistic, I always loved the music, and didn't realize until I was in my teens that there was anything unusual about having a musical family. My great uncle Elsworth Cozzens played ukelele and recorded and co-wrote songs that were popular way back when...

Mike Auldridge on Cannonball Blues and Tennessee Stud. Once I take the seamless blend of Duffey's and Starling's voices for granted, I hear Mike and his many nuances and think he might be the best thing about this perfect band. Ben Eldridge, I have decided, is just as much the banjoist as Don Reno. If there is one party waiting for me somewhere down the road, this is what I want it to be. This is the sound, the attitude, and the soul.

WAMU-FM sponsored and, I assume, recorded the show. They had some pretty good Ampex AG-440s with dolby at the time. It sounds like they rebroadcast this at a later date (or live), which may explain the origin of this recording. The Scene liked to work with individual mics for the instruments (at least the bass, banjo and dobro) , and a center mic for vocals, which Duffy also used for his mando. l can't tell if this was a multi-track or not, but these guys did all the work and were extremely easy to mix. If it was multi-track you'd probably hear a little more dobro in "Baby Blue" - Mike seems way in the back on that one. Noticing some other level shifts - so probably just 2 track. (added) Oh, just heard a shout out to soundman Bob Goodman. Bob ran a sound company out of Falls Church (Professional Sound?) and did a lot of festivals. He even rented some speakers and amps to me for another Scene gig where I did sound for them. It now makes sense; this was a feed off his live sound board.

I was at this show. It was a big Quonset Hut type gym, and everyone sat on the floor as I recall. The announcer was, I believe, Dick Cerri, from WAMU-FM, which programmed 40+ hours a week of Bluegrass. The Autoharp player mentioned would have been Bryan Bowers. Along with the Seldom Scene I also recorded him (at another venue) at one time. I recall a problem getting paid by Bowers, LOL.

Pretty sure you got John Duffey on some lead guitar here too! It sounds like him on guitar at the beginning of Grandfather's Clock. If you listen it does sound like the mandolin is absent in the beginning and all of a sudden it appears in the middle, so i think Duffey switched instruments mid-song. I don't believe Starling could shred a guitar like that. Duffey even says it before they do the song lol. Good stuff though! This is a great show.
