Justice is often used interchangeably with the word "fairness", but is incarceration a fair punishment for the offender? Do we ever look into why these offenders commit crimes? To civil rights lawyer Will Tseng, some of these criminals are also victims of their fate, born into poor, broken, or abusive families. Here, Will explains the vicious cycle of poverty, criminality and incarceration, and urges us to rethink whether the current criminal justice system is truly effective in mitigating crimes and social issues.

As a civil rights lawyer, Will Tseng has taken on a number of pro bono cases to assist the under-privileged in their fight for justice. Some of the clients he has represented included factory workers, toll collectors, students, and single moms. Although the pro bono culture in Taiwan is not pervasive, Will believes assisting those individuals who cannot afford legal services for the pro bono purpose is a lawyer's obligation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
