Sarah Chen performed many poetic songs, notably those written by Xiao Xuan during her mid-career with EMI. However, this song is a rare piece based on ancient Chinese poetry. The verse follows the "Ru Meng Ling" format and is known by its first line, "Who Sits at the Window?" It describes extreme loneliness, where the poet is accompanied only by their shadow at the window. When night falls and the lamp burns out, even the shadow disappears. This verse originates from the Song Dynasty.
The song's long-term impact may have been affected by two production puzzles. First, there may have been a mix-up about the poet's identity. The album's insert credits the poem to Li Qingzhao, the renowned female poet of the Northern Song Dynasty. However, the "All Song Poetry Collection" attributes it to a male poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, Xiang Hao. Did Sarah Chen know whose lines she was singing? Would that have changed her performance?
Second, the verse was modified to consistently add an "er" sound after "shadow," making it indistinguishable from its homophone "infant." In typical conversations, ‘shadow’ is followed by ‘zi’ rather than ‘er,’ as in ‘Ying Zi.’ ‘Ying Er,’ with a different intonation that’s lost in a song, refers to infant. Thus, ‘Ying Er’ in a song lends to a default interpretation of ‘infant’ or ‘baby’ rather than ‘shadow.’ Sitting with an infant on a dark night isn't so lonely, is it? Even after the lamp has gone out and the baby has gone to bed?
Converting an ancient poem into a song is a serious undertaking. Done perfectly, the song becomes immortal; with slight imperfections, it risks obscurity. No wonder there are so few songs based on ancient poetry.
But Sarah Chen's singing was truly remarkable. We believe she hit D6 at around 2:32. Even Li Qingzhao and Xiang Hao would not object to her singing.
