During WW2, General Patton slapped a soldier (on the soldier's helmut / head with his gloves, if the movie Patton is correct in the depiction of the incident) in the field hospital. Was he wrong? Of course, he was. There were cries for his head. Fortunately, General Eisenhower (Patton's boss and Allied Commander in Chief of the European Theater of War) had the good sense of defending and keeping Patton, who was their best general in armored tactics. None of the other generals, US, British, or Canadian, came close.
