The CHA welcomed Dr. Steph Haydon from the Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology at University of Birmingham to our SIG Discussion Group on 6th March 2024 . Steph talked about the 'Voluntary takeover of community hospitals' and the session was Dr. Helen Tucker, CHA President and SIG Co-Convenor.
An overview of Steph's talk -
"This talk will focus on vital importance of fundraising and volunteering in community hospitals. We will hear about the learning from community hospitals that have transferred to community owned charities, and apply this to our wider community hospital network.
In July 2023, it was reported that St Ives residents had raised £1 million to buy their community hospital (the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital), which had been closed in the NHS, saving it from permanent closure. This case, though unusual, is not unique. Between 1984 and 1999, nine hospitals in England left the NHS for charitable control.
This talk examines why these transfers occurred, and what has happened since. We will look at the different communities involved in the process, the meanings and values they ascribe to their hospitals, and how they and their hospitals have adapted since returning to charitable control.
Through exploring the 'communities' behind 'community hospitals' (e.g. local residents, Leagues of Friends, patient groups, staff), findings shared will be relevant - not just as indicators of what may happen to the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital in future - but to all community hospitals. Findings illustrate why different communities support their hospital (e.g. through fundraising, volunteering, activism), the vital role they play in shaping the outcomes of that hospital, and the co-productive relationships formed between them."
