I’m a Vikings fan and Randy’s rookie season was only like the 2nd year that I could really follow and understand football, so it was a magical time for me. The best rookie season of any WR, if not of all positions. I give Moss the edge in terms of pure talent, and I’d say he had the better career by the tiniest of margins. But I have to admit, some of the criticisms about Moss’s work ethic and behavior at the time still seem valid. Everyone takes the occasional play off, the difference is he would flaunt the fact that he did so, and he would sometimes flaunt the fact that his abilities enabled him to get away with things other players couldn’t get away with. Things got weird later in Moss’s career too, insulting the caterers, etc. He seems to be in a better place now, but his work ethic and where he was mentally at the time might have prevented him from being the GOAT (I guess you can still argue that he is, but Jerry’s got it in my book.) Relatively speaking, I think TO got more unfair criticism for his behavior. I mean people actually called him selfish for playing injured in the Super Bowl. I also think TO was a more well-rounded receiver. But, the Lambeau Moon and “straight cash homey” comment that followed are still iconic. Eat it, Joe Buck.

Jerry was a great receiver but whats amazing is a running back like Emmitt Smith with 175 touchdowns and 18 thousand yards in the trenches that is amazing

Notice the question was about whether he got the credit he deserved as a player. But instead of talking about himself he shifts the conversation to the people that he thinks are the all time greats and that he thinks are deserving of praise. Without adding his own name in that conversation. That is some true humility. I think Jerry Rice over time had the best career. Moss was the most gifted in an athletic sense. But TO running over the middle while being a huge target, and doing EVERYTHING in an era where doing so was punished in a way that is literally illegal now. To me what TO did felt extraordinary. He is the one I looked at and thought to myself, this thing I am witnessing is truly out of this world. And the NFL Hall of Fame will forever be diminished to me for not making him a first ballot hall of famer due to politics.

People attempt to diminish Jerry’s accomplishments and say he was great because he had great quarterbacks. People say he is a product of his work ethic and not his physical gifts. People say he has great numbers because he played a long time. Imagine if he didn’t tear his ACL in week one of a season what his numbers would look like. Don’t forget he led the league in receiving yards six seasons so he definitely had gifts. He had touchdowns of 80+ and 90+ yards so it wasn’t all about his quarterback. He played a large portion of his career in a league that wasn’t nearly as pass and receiver friendly as it became. His numbers literally speak for themselves. Chad and Shannon are correct Jerry is in his own category.

Chad is right I've been saying the same thing about Owens and Moss for the longest. I never seen two receivers dominate a game the way those two did. Those two would get less than 100 catches and have double digit TD's every season.

Gratitude. Ps On February 6, 2005 I was in the hospital due to a bowel obstruction/Crohn’s , I wanted the Eagles to win that Super Bowl. I also wanted those Vikings to win that 1998 NFC Championship Game. I use to be a Raiders fan, now I just respect the player's and coach's dedication.
