Dear Buckin When you felled that tree so close to that house it showed skill and confidence and to prevent the butt kicking up into the dwelling as it's extremely hard to judge how it will react when the crown strikes the ground you simply tied a rope to it ! What a great tip thanks for sharing that .

I have been using a 200t for trail work lately and used a .025 raker gauge. Well the darn thing will grab and stall out the chain. I even had the saw ripped out of my hands 40' up 3 times when it bit fast as the limb fell free (Big limb, over 6")(The third time actually bent several links on my chain). So I am now on my 5th grinding of a different chain and each time I ground the chain without touching the rakers, it has gotten better. With some research, I discovered they actually have a raker gauge specifically for low profile chains. I don't know what the specks are, but I am waiting until I do one more grind on the chain before trying it to see how much it takes off. I have also notice the chain is more grabby on really dead barkless trees rather than recently dead trees. I know there is a hard and soft setting for rakers, but my kunundrum is I cut both types in a single day.

Sawing a big spikey date palm for an ol' lady from church, I thought, 'Dang chain went blunt sudden like.' Arha, it took a moment to realise I had found a clay paver buried in the foliage. Mind you I had nibbled a good couple inches into the paver. BUT, as you know, pavers and cement blocks will generally win against a regular chainsaw. So 'n I took a look to see my near new chain all bent towards the tips and gnarly to boot. Coming here I realised that I may as well get whole new chain and practice my sharpening on the old one and then may as well try to repair the damaged rakers too. Thinks Me, " Buckin' Billy Ray will know". So it has proven. Thanks, Billy Ray. Good advice is to chop away ALL of the foliage around a tree trunk afore you insert your chainsaw as you never know if'n someone ahas parked up a garden paver for some Godolnyknows reasons, right in line with your cut. Now, what are rakers anyways? Another Buckin' Billy ray video coming right up.

I definitely prefer that the teeth on my change aren't all the same length. I've found that when the lengths vary, its more forgiving when you hit something, like one tooth will take the brunt, leaving the rest pretty sharp, so i only need to hit one tooth hard, and touch up the rest if i even need to touch them.

A good learning experience for me - not GREAT - but GOOD because it's sheer destructive to keep files in a can and let their cutting edges touch each other. They will dull the cutting edges because they are like-hardened and don't actually like each other. Your enthusiasm is high (good) and your knowledge is also high (very good) and I learned a lot from you - but keep those files from touching each other.

Hi I love your videos, are the rakers ment to be filed at a slight angle rather that straight flat top? Looking at the guide with the stihl file set it's saying to round down toward the front of the raker so as to make it less jumpy. If you look at the max wear line on the stihl chain it's actually at a slight angle forward. I can see your guide is angled toward the front slightly but most raker guides are flat..

Buckin morning ... You forgot the micrometers and digital calipers again ! Hee-Hee ... on a serious note (and I know ya might be a bit biased towards “gadgets”) STIHL makes a handy 2 in 1 tool that sharpens the cutters and rakers simultaneously ... I’ve used it at home in the vise and in conjunction with a stump vise in the field with excellent results ... VERY sharp and quick cut/cut and I can do a 20” (72drivers) chain in 3-4 minutes with it ! If ya ever chance by one check it out for farts and giggles - I’ve brought with on a few jobs workin with tree outfits I’ve occasionally subbed work to and to a man they all gave it 👍 ...

I’m gonna state something that I’ve heard/read and hopefully y’all can either confirm it or correct if it’s wrong: ....... That style of Husky gauge that sets the raker height from one tooth only, allows you “get away with” teeth of uneven length and still have a fast and smooth cutting chain. Other gauges, like the Stihl I have, that rest on more than one tooth, may not allow for fast and/or smooth cutting if the teeth are uneven in length. ....... Is that understanding true or false?
@brettblack7049
5 жыл бұрын
What you say is true. This style adjust each raker to it's tooth which is how it should be done. It's also referred to as a progressive guide because as the tooth gets shorter it takes more off the raker. If you us the standard type of raker guide it takes the same amount off the raker no matter whether the chain is new or old. It's about the angle from the tooth to the raker more than it is about how low the raker is below the tooth because of the action of the tooth in the wood. Notice as the tooth gets used up there is more distance between the tooth and the raker, in order to keep the angle the same you will have to remove more from the raker than when the tooth was new, this style gauge does that. The new Stihl 3-1 files(or pferd) file the tooth and the raker at the same time and incorporate a progressive style filing on the raker, but they don't help clean the gullet so that's another step in the process.
@nateb8245
5 жыл бұрын
It’s funny you mention the “Stihl 2 in 1” gadget. I bought one, thinking it would simplify sharpening for me and reviews on KZitem and elsewhere seemed almost universally positive. I believe the folks that gave those positive reviews had a genuinely good experience with that tool. But my experience was not. It took a TON off the rakers on a a couple first-ever sharpened chains. Made them way too grabby to the point they’d chatter and even stall the saw if you applied even moderate pressure. I must have gotten a lemon of a sharpener. I’ve since abandoned that tool and gone to sharpening with round file only.....like Buckin. Had to artificially shorten the teeth to bring them back into some sort of reasonable relationship to the over-shortened rakers. They are cutting much better now but I plan to invest in the husky gauge as my next evolution.
@brettblack7049
5 жыл бұрын
@@nateb8245 I've not heard of anyone having a bad experience with them until yours. I was not endorsing the product, just referring to it as a progressive style for the rakers. I wonder if you got one set up for .325 chain or maybe 3/8 picco/LP as there are a few different ones.
