I heat up the end of an old chisel and when it's red hot, run it over the eyes and claws and it leaves a nice black shiny finish as the wood surface kind of melts and scotches. Good idea to practice on a scrap piece first though.

What kind of oil did you use?

@timkelley6616 most of the time I use Osmo UV 420 clear protection oil.
