1. Don't harass the animators or the staff. 2. Chainsaw Man's production has been absolutely top of the line every episode. I've been watching every episode as soon as its up on Crunchyroll and rewatching them too. 3. I do share some of the complaints with the anime's visual style. The "cinematic realism" is executed amazingly and in terms of pulling off this art style this is one of the slickest looking anime of this sort since like the best looking parts of Death Note. Except this is consistently better looking than Death Note was as a whole aside from Death Note's absolute best cuts of animation. And for mass international appeal, "cinematic realism" is also 100% the way to go and if I was in charge I'd probably go with that to on a sort of cold calculating level. But I do feel something is lost from the manga itself. One of the things that makes Chainsaw Man a blast to read is how experimental the art and paneling gets. Even as early as the fight against the Zombie devil there's really creative uses of the paneling for the action. Which you literally cannot do with animation. But I was initially hoping that the anime would pop off and do its own crazy experimental stuff with it's animation and direction to capture that feel. Plus I was expecting a more neon drenched color pallet like the various color pages of the manga and the volume covers. If you asked me what I thought a perfect Chainsaw Man adaptation would look like before the anime's trailer came out, I'd probably have envisioned something like the various ending outros we've gotten (Speaking of which, can I say how blessed we are that every episode is getting a unique ending outro and they're all amazing?). The endings, especially endings 3, 4, and 5 capture a lot more of the vibe I always got from the Manga. Obviously they're endings so even if the art style of the show was like that the anime couldn't pop off like that 100% of the time, but they're wild experimental and trippy in a way I think captures the vibe of the manga more than the "cinematic realism" style we've gotten. And it's to me it's proof that they could have done a show more in that vein and that the look of the anime is creative decision. Though the anime is starting to veer into that direction a little bit now. Episode 6 ends with Denji jumping down to fight the Eternity Devil and that cut of him falling infinitely is my favorite of the show so far and that's like the sort of shit I was here for. And I also do feel seen by the anime staff who knew some people would be a little disappointed with the more realistic style by making all the endings as weird, quirky, and batshit looking as possible. I do adore the show still and think it looks great, but I would also have been really interested in seeing a different take on the source material that takes the art style and vibes and trippy visuals of the ending and applies that more to the show at large.

Yeah - but also for pt2, we've been mostly focused on Asa whose generally less expressive than Denji, Himeno, Power, Kobeni... etc. Interesting to note, there's a part of Japanese design that's very "loud" and "cluttered" looking by Western standards (ads, websites, even the Yahoo logo) - so this anime does seem to fit a more international style. Anyways, the anime is top of the line, but there's a spectrum to keeping a mangaka's "magic", on the opposite end being JoJo. The characters personality is being conveyed through movement and mannerisms, not the goofy faces. Unlike a lot of anime where conversations look like slideshows, CSM has little movements and gestures everywhere in every little conversation and isnt cutting corners. I like the subtle tone. The thing is, if you take for example, how scared power is of Makima when she's arguing with Denji. In the Manga, they have to show that through illustrations with single frames, so of course it's exaggerated. But in the Anime, the same information is conveyed through voice acting, and motion - and you still have facial expressions. I love the serious tone, it makes it feel like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, and totally makes sense given Fujimoto's love of cinema. But, that said it's logical it would appeal to me as a westerner who's used to naturalistic live action movies as opposed to exaggerated style in a lot of Japanese cinema and Anime. So, I think it will help Chainsaw man over here, but may make it less popular in Japan.

With the voice acting thing, I think the more toned down nature really fits well with the cinematic vibe the anime is going for. Most anime (if not all) have VERY overly exaggerated voice acting, I feel like everyone can admit that. But this more subtle voice acting really sells the feeling of it being a movie, it feels like I'm watching a silent voice or your name. It also really fits the characters because Fujimoto writes them like they're real people, dialogue in chainsaw man is always super natural and flows beautifully, it wouldn't feel right if their intonation kept changing EvErY sYlLaBlE tO bE dRaMaTiC or if they were too angry or too happy. Denji also gets pretty crazy with his voice acting in episode 3 and 4, but it feels natural because it fits the mood of what's happening, like he is actually going crazy in those scenes, if he was always that expressive it would lose it's impact. For me, it's a breath of fresh air to have such a cinematic anime, it reminds me of Darling in the Franxx and I've always loved that show to death, especially when it would go full cinematic mode.

Where in animation you don't have to do that as much because you can convey the emotions with many different tools. More subtle movements, voice, sound, color, music... Some shows can look a little awkward when they go out of there way to copy all of a manga's style choices. Shows that aren't based on a manga tend to be less exaggerated too. I really hope the director doesn't take this stuff to heart and change up the style for the second cour. the adaptation is amazing so far and the realistic cinematic vibe is by far the best part and makes it stand out amongst every other anime in production. I actually really enjoy the way this show was directed. It felt in many parts, more like the scene was directed in a live action form, which I’m not surprised if that’s the aesthetic they’re going for since their intro has near 1 to 1 recreations of iconic movies. While this means certain parts are less exaggerated or goofy as you would see in a normal anime adaptation, I think it’s work well for chainsaw man. Aki’s morning routine scene works well because it isn’t a shift from a super energised direction. In fact, one of the things I love is how little internal monologues there are (same with manga but), any emotions are thoughts are conveyed through their body language. Yes in animation we can exaggerate and yes it is good, but, sometimes too much lessens the impact. How many high energy anime have you watched where you feel tired of the constant sudden face change to like a chibi and then having a cartoony background and all, occurring constantly. There’s nothing wrong with this, but there’s the other approach of toned down exaggeration. The ‘realistic’ approach isn’t done much due to Japanese preferences, that’s cool. But I do wish to see anime where the exaggeration and subtle are more nicely balanced. Especially as in animation, like live action, you can make the subtle details still visible while on paper, you have to make it noticeable in a panel.

The only good thing Chainsawman anime did for me was that it made me appreciate Dorohedoro as an adaptation more. When I saw dorohedoro , It instantly reminded me pf the Chainsawman manga. i thought the world and the atmosphere of dorohedoro anime is really fun and gripping, but only if it were 2d instead of cg it would have been a lot better. But then Chainsawman came and I don't complain about the dorohedoro's cgi animation anymore. The animation may not be top notch, but at least it didn't end up soulless like Chainsawman. It captured the essence of the manga even tho the animation wasn't top quality. And I am grateful that the director wasn't a smug guy who thought he could do better than the original and completely changed the style. I hope dorohedoro season 2 comes out someday. And I hope some other studio does csm. They may not have mappa's budget, but they'll at least have the passion to adapt the source material faithfully

I too have an issue with the art style and direction. The animation just reminds me of Jujutsu Kaisen. Yes, they're the same studio but studios can make each show feel unique. I feel like CSM has no individuality that sets it apart. It seems like they just over animated it. I remember reading that the series was inspired by FLCL and reading through the manga, I could pick up on the inspiration. FLCL had unique animation, expressions, and a beautiful color palette. They could have kept the funny expressions and given it a less realistic color palette and it would have felt so much more special.

I completely agree. The chainsaw man manga is extremely popular. Of course people are going to be upset when the anime takes away one of the very core elements of what makes Chainsawman Chainsawman. There are anime that do well in a more realistic/gritty style, Attack on Titan being a fantastic example. That’s because the AoT manga had a realistic/gritty style to begin with, and the anime did fantastically by maintaining the same tone whilst transforming it into a different medium. People saying stuff like "if you want manga style go read manga" are missing a huge point. People aren't wanting some "manga style", they want Chainsaw man. “But Fujimoto really likes so and so film!” Okay, and Miura said he really liked and was inspired by the look of Disney films and their fantastical element. So would Berserk have looked good if it was animated like The Little Mermaid or Pinnochio? Even if it looked good to someone watching it, would it still be the Berserk that Miura drew that the fans know? And at that point would you tell Berserk fans they’re entitled because the animated version isn’t like the manga? IMO, CSM anime would have been fantastic with a style similar to something like Spiderman Into the Spiderverse. Something with strong colors and impact, and not afraid to exaggerate things to make them "pop", like it does in the manga. Of course I think sending hate/brigading is wrong, but hopefully people’s responses were enough and they rethink the style direction for CSM season 2 going forward.

Constantly episode directors are pulling in Western cinematography language with framing, shot composition, heck even the color grading, which really feels like Fujimoto as he is constantly pulling in film references. If anything the anime feels like a live action movie, and honestly I think it's an interesting choice. So far it's working really well. It's nice that the manga is so expressive and have so many memeworthy facial expressions, but this isn't the essence of CSM, it's just a minor loss for the sake of an unique stylization. The adaptation kept what really matters: the characters, the comedy, the weirdness in worldbuilding, the energy in the action scenes, etc. Even the voice acting fits well. It's toned down compared to the average anime, but it doesn't lack emotion. It also feels more like an live action movie. I do think the director sounds pretencious tho, it's kinda annoying, but not a reason to invalidate his actual work.

And Power’s “Tis an awful feeling” idk it just hits different Like idk, I think it is a departure from your normal anime but it really works for me here, and connects with me more as a real human and raises the stakes than the sometimes tiring melodrama of average Shonen and there are still the fair share of over the top moments, Powers entrance, running to the Sea Cucumber, Denji’s reaction to Power offering her Tits, his devilish cackling as he fights I don’t know, I could agree with the expression and color being maybe it feels like we’re losing out on something, but it’s all contributing to this delicate, real, dangerous, tone that I feel is really gonna pay off in the long run when shit gets real crazy

Okay so it’s not just me then. The manga is wild, over-the-top, super fast paced, and extremely chaotic. It exaggerates all events of the plot on the surface level to make them as ridiculous as possible while downplaying all the narratively important moments in order to express the thematic significance of the story in a very nonchalant way. And this is good if it matches your taste. It makes it funnier, gives it faster pacing, makes it feel really unique, etc. However, there are many people who claim the manga is overrated because of that exact reason. They say the pacing is too fast, the plot is too ridiculous and in-cohesive, and not enough emphasis is placed on the narratively climactic moments. Which are fair criticisms I guess, but I think these people fail to realize that Fujimoto made it like that on purpose because he thought it was funny. And honestly, it’s freaking hilarious. The man takes nothing seriously at all, it’s such a breath of fresh air in the cheesy world of anime. Chainsaw Man prioritizes fun and creativity over realism. And it’s far from the only series to do that so I don’t know why some people act like it’s some major flaw of the manga. Anyway, that’s beside the point. I get the sense that Mappa is trying to get these people to enjoy the show too. The show slowed down the pacing, made the style feel less over-the-top, and puts more emphasis on the “epic moments”. It makes the whole show feel more controlled and “shonen” instead of chaotic and unique like the manga. I’ve already seen people say things along the lines of “I wasn’t a huge fan of the manga but this anime is okay”. And that’s actually a bad thing, here’s why: I think this was a terrible decision by Mappa for a couple reasons. First: why? Chainsaw Man is so freaking popular as a manga. Like record levels of popularity. Clearly the ridiculous style is appealing to a vast majority of people so why change something that already works? Second: by changing it, you’re reducing the qualities of the series that made people love it in the first place. So of course fans who love the series for what it is are going to be salty when you change what it is. I’m honestly surprised the anime isn’t getting more hate from the west. Third: they failed to capture the creator’s original intention. The CSM anime feels way closer to a typical shonen than the manga does and if you’ve read anything by Tatsuki Fujimoto, then you should understand that that’s the ABSOLUTE LAST THING he’d ever want you to feel regarding his work. Like could you imagine if Dragon Ball was remade and the cell fight lasted 5 minutes? It’s like they’re making a statement that the style of the original was somehow incorrect. It’s not the same as when story events are altered slightly (maybe in an attempt to make things more clear to the audience). I’m okay with that. In fact, I encourage it. But they’re straight up changing the aesthetic of the series. Like come on man. I’m not a huge fan of the anime, however I think it could’ve been way worse. The changes aren’t huge and it’s not quite to the point where I’d consider it flat out disrespectful.

Chainsaw man is not a bad adaptation by most standards. But I think people in Japan absolutely boycotted this in order to send a message. I think they were mostly furious because the director were getting petty for reducing mainstream anime to a bunch of cliche. Sure, it's an industry but so is most of entertainment and sometimes, entertainement is almost religious. Mocking anime without acknowledging its actual qualities, it would be like saying Soccer sucks in Brazil. Nonsense. Anime is still one of the finest media because you're pretty much allowed to touch on many subjects and there's a wide tolerance of genres. Yeah there are a fucking ton of isekai, some are blatant opportunistic stories to appeal to the greater number. But japanese media overall is more colorful than the animation western does produce, while it's been years lesbian characters are frowned upon in american cartoons for example. I think at least, that if Ryuu Nakayama would have shut up or at least paid attention to the condescending tone his message might imply, japanese fans wouldn't have bothered buying the infamous blu ray products.

Im Japanese, and while i think the anime is looking good and super cool, i can see how the comedic scene in anime fail to capture the tempo and the tone of original manga. everything else is cool tho, even the CGI looks good imo. Just the gag scenes that seem to not land where its supposed to be, Also, Denji's seiyu really doesnt do well with this direction. His main weapon is really the well paced Meri and Hari acting (idk how to say it in english) but he was told to act supressed so he sounds pretty dull with no release of tension whatsoever the entire time, and that crashes the balance of interaction scenes especially with Aki. Aki and Power on the other hand, do quite well even with the realistic aproach. Power is allowed to be more anime leaned, and Aki doesnt feel too odd either way. so the gag scenes without Denji is actually better in anime. idk. thats just my interpretation but I still think Anime is solid on its own. I wish we could've gotten a bit of both worlds. I love cinematographic colors and art direction in anime (like Makoto Shinkai movies), and the Chainsaw Man adaptation so far is absolutely gorgeous and really well directed. It's perfect in its execution, but it just lacks some of the charm of the original work. When I first read the manga, I envisioned the adaptation to be a lot bolder, louder, experimental, with popping and vivid colors. That's what I got from Fujimoto's artworks anyway. And that it would emphasize that "crazy fever dream feeling" a bit more. I think the endings are amazing in that regard and truly embody what Chainsaw Man feels like. We sometimes get close to that vibe in the fight scenes, and I really appreciate that, but it probably won't ever truly tip over into that area, since the director doesn't seem to like that. In the end, I'm still a bit sad that they decided to take a more realistic approach, but I also won't say anything against it. I think it would appeal to Fujimoto more anyway, since he's a big movie fan. And honestly, getting such a high budget adaptation is already a great thing.

This box of comments is why MAPPA can get away with anything with shounen adaptations. It is almost like people instantly forget adaptations that try to improve the original material and start to make excuses for dumb mistakes. Saying that the best way to adapt this series is tuning down the VA's energy, reducing the usage of the OST, stripping down character acting, and using uninteresting camera angles to emulate cinema, is quite stupid and inconsequential. Fujimoto has cited FLCL and Kizumonogatari as references to his work, but it is almost like nobody of these commenters has seen those anime (Or is capable to project the ideas into the adaptation). In reality, both of those anime understand that they are in an animated medium, that they can't emulate live-action, but that they can make things interesting by fully using their own medium and using animation to make things exciting, while not indulging in the """undesired""" otaku/moe animation. Why would someone try to emulate live-actions? They don't even get the walking motion correctly, it is the stiffest piece of shit that I have seen. It is rather horrible when you also watch three other shows this season (Which shounen fans apparently don't even know) that have ten times more soul and actually get basic human movements correctly

I don’t mind it at all. The manga is already amazing, and I appreciate the anime recognizing that and choosing to tell it in a different tone. It makes it a lot more interesting to watch as a manga reader rather than a one-to-one adaptation, which often times gets me really bored. As someone who enjoys both mediums, I love looking at the differences between the two. It’s just important to understand that even a shit adaptation can’t ruin the manga, it’ll always be great. The anime and manga are separate products, even if one is adapted from the other. Look at Disney and the Brothers’ Grimm fairy tales, they take two completely different approaches to telling the same story yet both are often regarded as amazing. I think it’s just important to understand that anime is a different medium from manga with creative people who have their own vision. A lot of the time, out of fear, directors back down from adding their own flare but that’s why directors of anime are so much less known than mangaka. As an artist myself, I totally respect how they change things to suit their own vision because it gives us a new interesting experience we might not have gotten otherwise, and even if they might make mistakes that make the anime worse than the manga. It’s not the “anime version of the manga,” there is the anime and there is the manga. If you like one more than the other, great, but don’t try to diminish the artist statement of the other just because it’s not exactly the same as the one you prefer

On Disney's topic, you'll however recognize, for example, how few people know that Ariel actually turns to foam by the end of the little mermaid as the recent controversy demonstrated though. Adaptations can often "erase" the original in the public's mind

How can you go into making something with the intention to make it something else entirely? You wanna make an anime that isn't an anime? That just screams, "disaster". As good as the show probably is, idk why one would be ashamed to stay true to the source material's unique style, most really popular anime do so and even try to highlight it in some cases. And not even just that, but trying to avoid adding humor or any of the stuff that anime in general is known for to give the show a slightly darker tone? To make a show that is one thing trying to be something it's not is just setting up for disaster. Trying to make the show mid by trying to add realism to something that's perfectly fine without it.

It's a matter of mediums. They're literally classified as different arts (cinema being the 7th, comics being the 9th). They don't have the same grammar: cinema works with visuals that change one at a time on a fixed time (you cannot change or fluctuate it unless you edit it) in a single space/screen with movement and sound, while comics work with several visuals at the same time (several panels, text, lines of movement, onomatopoeias...) that you can experience at your own timely pace and sequence, and the movement and sound you have to imagine through intuition. That's the reason there MUST be an adaptation/translation from medium to medium in order to explote the cons of each visual language. When there is a straight up copy paste of a medium into another, it "feels" incomplete and it's kind of a wate of potential.

As someone who hasn't read the manga but have heard from manga readers how incredible the manga is, I've been looking forward to Chainsaw Man for quite a while now. While I do appreciate Nakayama's vision and have enjoyed the anime thus far, I'm pretty disappointed to learn how it's straying from the initial style and charm that captured so many hearts worldwide. I do enjoy how cinematic it feels and the realist approach is enjoyable but sometimes the show just gets so bloody serious, it would've been nice to have those moments contrasted with the hilarious memish expressions from the manga. I wonder if the criticism will have an affect on the style of the second season.

As a person that is unhappy with the Chainsaw Mam adaptation, i'll add my 5 cents to this comment section: I applaud that the adaptation team is brave enough to do something diferent to "normal, usual" anime. My problem with it is that they are failing in making it entertaining. Is just way too boring, even the moments that are meant to be funny don't land. The direction is very plain and feels way to tryhard. The action scenes are slugish and don't have any dynamic or momentum. The voice acting is also boring. I understand the more "normal voice" aproach but other things have done it better (Gridman, Eva, anything from Masaki Yuasa or Ghibli). Things can have emotion and still sound like "a normal person". TL;DR Chainsaw Man adaptation is simply failing to be entertaining, regardless of any other possible reason
@BoobaMilkTea

Yeah as the episodes went on. It really only boils down to - it's not that entertaining. Now the CSM "fans" could try to defend this... But if CSM had no hype and you could measure the "engagement" similar to how KZitem can based on the watch time, it would be much lower than something very "animey" like Bocchi. I'm betting if you had something like Neurallink and measured brain activity, CSM would be low engagement. On average, anime is pretty entertaining with how much sht goes on in 24 minutes, and how over the top stuff is. Live action Movies are actually a lot less entertaining by default because most the time they know you paid money to sit down for 1 hr+ at a theater. When choosing to direct like this, they had to combine it with the entertaining factors of anime, which they largely ignored. Something like Kizumonogatari is an example of this done right.

I knew something was missing and why things had been feeling so monotonous since episode 2. Fujimoto's expressions and comedy carry the slower parts of the manga, so taking them away just sort of leaves the viewer waiting between beats for significantly longer. A good example of this I think would be the nut kick, which in the anime doesn't have nearly as much impact as in the manga due to the differences in pacing.
@yonavlad3723

I felt a little dissatisfied at that point, you could really feel the impact in the manga. Also, for some reason the translation in the manga was changed when Makima asks Denji and Aki if they’re able to work together, with Aki saying “He’s the worst…” and Denji saying “No problemo.”

Yeah in the manga it's so crazy you wonder if they ever gonna even be able to use the toilet normally after 😂. But we still got one more "nuts" scene I guess. Toning down the expressions kinda disregards a good part of the manga.

I kinda see what the director meant, as many people don't point out but CSM characters are actually much much more humane and deep than typical shonen, and that appeals to a desire to make a dramatic, cinematic experience. But, Fujimoto is influenced by filmmakers like Tarantino, and I feel like if Tarantino makes an anime it would be wackier in style than the CSM anime is right now. I mean CSM has this weird quality that I feel can be conveyed best in a manga since it transitions so well between the dramatic, the wacky, and the absurd.

I personally didn't like the adaptation, and it's the second time Mappa kind of "ruins" an extremely over the top manga, being weird and random is part of the charm, but they make it feel waaaay too much like a Hollywood production, so it ends up feeling lacking in personality, does it look cool?, yes, the animation is good?, yes, but it doesn't feel like Chainsawman, it just feels like some kind of netflix adaptation, which definitely made me want to avoid the anime and just stick to the manga

Usually with these hyped anime, the mangas experience is greatly enhanced. For example wit studio season 1 AOT is probably the prime example. The music, the animation, the voice acting, everything elevated the manga. But here... I'm not sure if it's enhancing the experience that much, at worst it might be worse than the manga. Obviously a manga has no sound, but there's a certain head cannon manga readers have in mind, and catching that should be a goal of a director imo, especially for popular manga series.
