Great tutorial! I have done lots of faux finishes, but it's been a few years. Looking to redo kitchen cabinets. Currently they are enameled, cathedral style doors. I'm going to use chalk paint, and it's my first adventure. I'm practicing on some smaller cabinets in my studio first. What is the best plan for preparation? Sanding? Just break the finish, or get serious. LOTS of doors! I'm worried about the wear with chalk paint and wax. It's not just a "designer kitchen"; I actually cook.... ALOT! Thanks.

homesteadmama ... I am so glad you liked the tutorial 🙏💛💛 I really appreciate your kind comment and feedback 💛 You are absolutely correct with the graphite ... you want to add a little bit at time almost like your dusting it on. You don’t have to use clear glaze if you don’t have any you can achieve this technique with just the chalk paint and water . I recommend to make sure your brush is moist and add water somewhat frequently but not to wet just moist. I have some super fun ideas coming and my next tutorial will be a floating marble technique it’s absolutely gorgeous and I swear it so easy 👌💛💛 Thanks so much for watching and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime 😉🎨

Hi, noticed that you do not prime before painting; will that be ok and paint will not peel off? I have 2 antique chairs that I want to paint them Ivory/antique white as they are dark brown with heavy carving. Please need your advice on this project. Thanks!
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
3 жыл бұрын
Hi!! Most of the time I don't prime my pieces, it just depends on the current finish is on the piece you are painting. If is heavily varnished and you think it will have bleed through you can use a primer on this and then chalk paint your project. In my Chalk Paint 101 Q&A I talk about primers as topic that you may want to take a look at: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mKuM1Zetkaegl3Y ❤️🙏🎨

Thank you so much for your tutorial. I appreciate how you explain your process so clearly and thoroughly. I Instead of applying clear glaze and then stippling your paint over it wouldn't it have been easier to make up premixed glazes of graphite and cocoa and proceeded with that,..or does this give you a better effect?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
4 жыл бұрын
Leah Ben ... thanks so much Leah 🙏💛 for your kind comment and great question! So you can premix your paint and glaze together... but for me when I am creating highlights and lowlights ( coco and Graphite) I am also creating shading... so I felt more control with just paint on top of glaze so I can added as I needed. The premix will be diluted and a little trickier to do but not impossible. So to say yes or no ... it’s truly up to you how you like to work and it might feel better to play with a premix of chalk paint and glaze. Again it’s just my experience and preference but it’s a great question and I hope this helps as an answer 😉🤔💛💛

Your technique is outstanding throughout the refinishing process, but it truly is left for naught with the products of paint your using that have absolutely no durability for scratching or abrasion even with waxes or any type of clear coat after. A true long lasting finish is only as good as the substrate underneath it is... hence sanding, washing, tack drying, priming and then maybe your system of chalky paint. Where as 100% acrylic base coat followed by alkyd glaze, paint and odorless mineral spirits mixed equally 3 parts has so much more open time to manipulate your creation, doesn't need a clear coat for durability and passes any finger nail scratch test after fully curing... meaning it won't suffer delamination as your beautiful pieces will. But I've only been doing this for 36 years both domestically and abroad.

Hi there from Singapore - firstly, love and thank you so much for your tutorials! Great description and video editing - excellent quality. My question is, why did you choose to use glaze, rather than applying clear wax, then adding the low lights (graphite) and highlights (coco)? What effect does the glaze achieve that wax doesn't?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
4 жыл бұрын
Maida de Vega-Pierret ... thank you so much for your kind comment and feedback. I use the glaze as textured medium, it is much easier to use and I have more control over my highlights and lowlights verses wax for details. I love using clear glaze to blend paint and add depth, if I need to correct anything it is so much easier and less product use as well. Glaze is not a sealer , it is a decorative medium so you still actually need to apply either clear wax seal or water base Lacquer. I hope this helps 💙 Thanks so much for watching 🙏🎨

It's just paint. Find a small, kinda junky piece of furniture someone is throwing out and get a few of your favorite colors and some decent brushes. You can get inexpensive supplies from Walmart your 1st few times, so you're not intimidated or stressed about wasting money. Then, take a deep breath, find a video to follow along with, if you drink, have a glass of wine, and allow your inner child to come out and play!!! What's the worst that can happen? Worst, it goes back to the trash or just keep adding to it. At least you tried, had some fun and might be pleasantly surprised! On the other hand, you might actually be impressed by the artist inside of you who simply needed a little guidance! This is the perfect channel for amazing guidance and technique. Just remember it doesn't start out looking great. Keep adding layers of colors and waxes until it comes to life. There's an artist inside each of us waiting to come out and play with colors ... Have fun!

Hi Christina, Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback and comment 🙏 I actually just finished ✅ a beautiful cabinet with the same colour palette and brown tones you are describing. It might be something else you might want to think of for inspiration. I will be posting the video this Saturday! If you want the same look and features as this video you commented on, use any chalk paint , waxes you can get and as for clear glaze I highly recommend Benjamin Moore clear glaze. It is a paint glaze for decorative ideas 💡 some of the art glazes are for other purposes and also sealers but you want clear glaze! I will be demonstrating more glaze projects coming soon! It’s my favourite way to paint or highlight furniture projects x Thank you again for your kind words and support to the channel 🙏♥️♥️

I’m going to be painting my china Hutch and have a question...do you paint the inside of cabinet, backside of the doors and drawers?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
4 жыл бұрын
Cristy Haverkamp ... Hi Cristy I do paint the interiors and depending on the condition of a piece I may paint the back. Some pieces ( like a desk) is designed to be placed with the back side showing so for sure I will paint the back as well. The drawers I paint and stencils along the side or inside too! It’s very tricky to show on camera so I don’t show because viewers wouldn’t be able to see much. It’s really up to you and your personal tastes, I know not everyone paints the interior but I like it looks better and it’s nice to through ya contrast colour inside 😉🎨

wow I love it! I just discover chalk painting this week.. I received a black faux fireplace without all the wood deco that you have on your furniture, but this stone effect would be sooooo great on it. Just need to forget my "fear" of going on a brand new big electric fireplace. hahaha. Don't know if I will do it but thank you for all the tips. Greetings from Switzerland and happy new year

This is so beautiful!! 😍 This finish would look so nice on my China cabinet. But every time I mention painting it, my husband has a meltdown 😂😂 And, why chalk paint? Can you use just regular paint for this? 🤔
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Angie!! I recommend using a furniture paint (i.e. chalk paint) with regular paint you might have problems with it adhering. Chalk paint works awesome on furniture. Just for you to get an idea what happens with regular paint. I did a project where I bought this furniture piece that was painted by the previous owner with latex paint and it was cracking and bought it and sanded it back down and chalk painted it. Take a look kzitem.info/news/bejne/qmh6snWYf5Sqpqw

Are you using wax with when you have used glaze? Can we use Annie Sloan's Lacquer instead of glaze? Can we do not use glaze at all?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom
4 жыл бұрын
aetmek ... yes, I use wax after glaze , glaze is not a sealer and I applied clear wax and as I mentioned in the tutorial I added a little black wax to edges and corners... very tiny amount. As to your lacquer question, I am guessing no , but you could ask your local stockist that carry AS products. You don’t have to use clear glaze you can add water instead, but will have to use water frequently sprites it not saturated and continues as you work around your project. Hope this helps 💛

@TheReclaimedHeirloom

Hi! I think you are referring to clear glaze is a medium to allow you to move the chalk paint more easily and give you more working time. What you would need to seal the piece is with clear wax or a top coat sealer like a varnish or urethane. 🎨🙏❤️

@TheReclaimedHeirloom
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alyson! It all depends with the size of the piece! For washes you don’t need a lot of paint. I would start off with small amount and if you need more mix more. Remember it’s 50 paint 50 water. So go small! 🎨🙏❤️
