Hi Brenda! I have not used chalk paste but seasoning your board is more important if you are using actual chalk to create with. I don’t recommend seasoning when using chalk markers & my best guess is the paste would be similar to markers. Thanks for your question 🖤 happy chalking!

Hi there. I thought your video was very informative. I have attempted to make my first chalkboard and am having a problem with the ghost imaging. I thought after watching your video I had it solved but it's not. I know this video is older but hope maybe you will see this. I have sprayed a piece of plastic from a picture frame that is used instead of glass with the Rustoleum chalkboard paint. It has multiple coats. I have then seasoned it and when I write on it, it's perfect until I go to erase it. A basic chalkboard eraser doesn't do a thing and if I use a soft cloth to wipe the chalk off, it comes off however leaves a big time ghost image of whatever I write. The only thing that gets rid of it is if I wet a rag and wipe it down. The ghost image isn't just faint, it's strong! It looks horrible. I don't know why it won't come off. I thought it was the plastic sheet but you clearly had one done in your video so I'm at a loss. Is there anything you know of I'm doing wrong or can do?

Hi Gina! I'm so sorry! Those ghost images can be such a pain & every chalkboard surface can react so differently. I hope I can help you get this figured out. Here are a few things you can try...1) When seasoning the board do it more than once & remember you are not trying to wipe the dust off...you are rubbing it into the pores of the chalkboard. The more chalk in the pores before you write on it should decrease the chances of a ghost image. 2) Use Anti-dust chalk vs the normal chalk. This chalk is more compact & doesn't crumble as easily. So when you are drawing with it you wont have lots of extra dust being pushed into the board resulting in a ghost image. 3) Try using a DRY Mr Clean magic eraser to erase it vs the typically felt chalk erasers. I've found they work really nicely on the plastic or vinyl chalkboards. Try these tips out and keep me posted! I'm here to help. You can also shoot me an email if you have more questions: a.sheshe.design@gmail.com Thank you so much for watching my video! 😘

This was published several years ago so I don't know if you'll see this to respond, but I just seasoned my chalkboard and it did not go well. I waited five days after painting it (Rustoleum, 3 coats), and then used the side of a piece of white chalk (crayola) and covered it vertically and horizontally. I took a damp, not wet, rag and gently wiped it off. Now I can see every seasoning mark. It looks like a plaid mess. I have no idea what I did wrong, but what can I do to fix it? Do I re-season it? Prime it and paint it again - i.e., start all over? HELP.

Catsin Q oh I’m so sorry! If I’m understanding you correctly...after seasoning you wiped the chalk with a damp rag! Typically after seasoning you want to “dry erase” with a felt eraser or dry rag. The idea is to keep the chalk in the pores of your chalkboard so you create on top of a layer of chalk. I only “wet erase” if I want to get all chalk off my board and start over. Does that make sense? Let me know if that helps or follow up with more details ❤️😘

When you use wet erase markers and then erase, do you have to re-season your board after?
@SheSheDesign
2 жыл бұрын
Great question Elizabeth! If you are doing a wet erase you don’t need to season the chalkboard. I need to make an updated video about seasoning because not all chalkboards are created equal. If you are using a smooth chalkboard like porcelain steel it is better for markers & because it’s pores are so small it doesn’t need seasoning. I hope this helped. Let me know if you need more help! 🖤

can you perhaps explain how to use LIQUID chalk markers over chalk board PAINTED walls? and how to prep/clean it?
@SheSheDesign

Hi Lisa, Unfortunately, Chalk markers are made for smooth non-porous surfaces (glass, plastic, vinyl porcelain steel chalkboards) & are usually hard to clean off other surfaces. BUT I still using chalk markers on all my chalkboards regardless. To clean them off I use Mr. Clean Magic erasers or the generic brand works too. If you still are struggling to get the wall clean than I would suggest repainting it & maybe avoid chalk markers if you are changing the chalkboard often. I appreciate knowing that you can “season” your chalkboard first so that the image will disappear when you erase it....but it will never again be a black chalkboard, right? It turns it into more of a charcoal grey color...I’m curious what if you season it with black colored chalk, assuming this exists? Also, I’ve heard that if you want to create a black chalkboard that will erase easily, you have to prime it first and then paint it with chalkboard paint. I guess the priming first fills in all the pores and still allows for a rich black color. However, I’m not sure what to use to prime it. If I’m just using a piece of wood, can i use acrylic gesso to prime it before painting with chalkboard paint? I’m going for a blackest-black chalkboard so I can use chalk markers and have them really stand out. Thanks for your video!

Hi Danielle, Sorry for my delayed response. I'm tying to get my channel up to date & playing catch up. If this is still something you are looking for answers to, I hope this helps. Yes everything you commented is correct. Priming will fill the pores & decrease the chances of the ghost images. Markers are meant for non-porous surfaces so they may still leave a ghost image. If you are using chalk markers you don't need to season before hand. Typically the markers will perform better without the chalk dust. But be prepared to have to really work to erase. I actually will just repaint the chalkboard if I want to start back to clean black chalkboard.

Wonder why not season the chalk board with black chalk?
@SheSheDesign
4 жыл бұрын
Laurie! Yes you can...however once you use white chalk or marker for your design it will grab the black chalk & your lettering will have more of a gray tone to it vs. the high contrast of the white. Does that make sense? If you prefer the super black chalkboard vs. the dusty one then I suggest not seasoning but just be prepared to make more of an effort to clean the chalkboard. It's completely your preference. Thanks for being here. 🖤

@SheSheDesign
8 жыл бұрын
Great question Kelly! Unfortunately if you don't want a ghost image you need to have chalk dust in the pores of your chalkboard before designing on it. If you use water it will take the chalk dust out of the pores and you need to re-season it. So here are a few suggestions to bring back the dark contrast of the board you are wanting. Design on it after seasoning and then go back & use water on the areas you don't have the design. (Q-tips & brushes work great) OR if you are sealing your design the matte finishing spray will darken the board on its own. You can see that in my sealing your design tutorial. Thanks for your question. I hope I was able to answer it. Happy Chalking! ❤️Ash

Hi Maria, Yes you can but the issue you might run into is the black chalk changing the color of the chalk you use on top of it. Also, seasoning isn't necessary if you're using chalk markers or if the chalkboard is smooth & has no pores.

Help!! I'm trying to make a chalkboard for my daughter-in-law's baby shower next week but the spray paint I sprayed on the backboard of a picture frame looks awful and feels very rough. I need to find a quick solution so am interested in the poster board or card stock idea. Did you spray or paint that with chalkboard paint or did you just draw your design with chalk straight into the board or card stock? Did you season it first?

Hi Emma!!!! Black Poster board is a great solution for events and parties! And You don't need to paint it! Just use a razor blade to cut it to the size you'd like and season it before you start drawing on it! For the best results use chalk and then just spray it with the matte finish spray to make it permanent! Good luck!!! ❤️

I read that you use chalk MARKERS on nonporous chalkboards. I take that to mean chalkboards on things like metal, plastic, glass, etc. I just made a new one on our wall, I'll test mine in a corner
@sorryyournameistaken6880
4 жыл бұрын
OK so I tested it on the corner of my daughters' new chalkboard wall and I had already seasoned that section, FYI. enter are used the chalk markers, for reference. I'm not even sure if you're talking about the same thing I am but I just wanted to let you know that I would say it was a no go on my wall. It's worth noting that, while the packaging to these chalk markers said nothing about the risk of it being permanent on some services, after reading others comments who had permanent marks when I was trying to find information on the right way to season IT, I saw a few times that people advised not using chalkboard markers on any chalkboard that was NOT made from non-porous paint. Then I started trying to figure out what the heck non-porous chalkboard paint even is, and it became pretty clear that what those people must have meant was that chalkboard markers are not a good idea to use on a chalkboard made on porous surfaces. lol. In other words, the wall that I painted her chalkboard on is definitely something I would say is "porous." other examples would be stuff like...wood, drywall like my situation...and fabrics? Many more but I can't remember squat rn. My kid has a window in her room that we made a chalkboard on. I would say that glass would be a non-porous surface. (Like metal, plastic, etc) She says the markers stayed on but it struck me that we did not condition that chalkboard paint on her window! so I am pretty confident she has a ghost image because of that. so we're gonna condition that glass and try the markers again. I'm not sure how soon I will be able to do that bye I'm gonna do my best to remember and come back and let you know. I know that your question is old but after all the work I did to find similar answers, I'm gonna throw what I know out into the universe for the next confused Googler, who HOPEFULLY will come where I have: to the only dang video I could get straight into from! Hi Chelby! First, I'm so sorry this is so delayed! YES!!! You totally can, however, it does required a little more effort to erase it or to save time I typically just repaint the surface. I’m so glad!!!! 😍 I would use chalk markers for the parts you won’t be erasing. The markers will only come off when you use moisture & lots of elbow grease. Then you can just dry erase (felt or microfiber cloth works great) the chalk parts you will be changing. Sketch out the “set” parts with chalk first & make sure you get them the way you want & then trace it with the markers! 🙌🏻 good luck my friend!!! It will turn out great!
