@@yuudemonia2271 I started by emulating the games, then made an AWBW account after getting a good chunk of the way through AW2. Which might not have been the best idea: AWBW maps generally have a different design philosophy than those in the actual games, leading to the two playing very differently. Tactics that work well in the games (such as trying to build up a Grit infantry wall) are significantly less effective on that site. Aside from what Incuggarch did here with popping Jake’s normal power to capitalize on the indirect range over any firepower boosts. That is indeed a valid strategy in the Dual Strike campaign as well, seeing that made me very happy.

As a complete neophyte that only plays single player and war room maps, I'm kinda stunned that you admitted that your goal was to stall out a harsh winter win... but you didn't have any ranged units. You see all throughout the match that if you can guard an artillery, you can lock down an area. He may have extended range on power but you can do far more than keep a single column for a defensive wall. Between the pipe segments and mountains, you could at least keep some pathways more hazardous than not at all. Nevermind that a lot of your funds went into useless b-copters that spent most of their days idling around because all it would take is a single anti-air to turn them into free target practice. If I were playing, I'd probably mimic some of his loadouts and see if I could stall him out of formation and whittle away with the super. Plus you can see his mindset once a real formation comes out and try to at least keep it even. It may be boring but it would at least mean that you might last a few days longer. All that said, it's easy for a nobody like me to talk when it's all after the fact.

Hey Mangs. The one thing that has continually upset me about watching these matches is trying to remake these wonderful maps in the games themselves. It's made things QUITE a challenge, but I keep trying!

@@isenokami7810 i wouldn't worry about making a map that doesn't work as intended. I have found the community to be very welcoming and the feedback is helpful (provided you don't take offence to criticism). Map making is my favourite part of awbw - some have done exactly what i wanted them to do (and been criticised for that) whilst others never worked as intended and have ended up being better for it. Making mistakes is not a negative as long as you learn from them, and some criticism you may receive is is not a negative if that criticism is pointing out the intention of the map (i.e. that factory has too many forests and mountains around it, makes it hard to reinforce... yes, that is the intention! Plan accordingly).
@isenokami7810

@@turbo8628 I’m not sure about criticism; the most demoralizing thing was just the test for my second map. I wanted to use the way labs can work in place of HQs, namely having to take all the opponent’s labs instead of just one, to make a map designed around the TF2 map Standin. Having a bunch of neutral labs that will be contested and change hands regularly. Still think that concept could work better on AWBW than in TF2, but the map I made was terrible. Too chokey, too many woods, I completely failed to account for Sami playing the map. I didn’t need criticism, it just sucked to play. By the time I realized I could save myself from a loss…by stalemating with artillery spam, I simply asked my opponent for a draw, I was done.

Global damage was the right choice. You can't really go wrong with it. I think the problem maybe have been all the battle copters. They seemed to ultimately not do anything because of how easily they get pushed out by AA. When you force someone to build lots of AA, they also gain the ability to absolutely slaughter infantry. So his AA counter your entire force, and his well covered Jake artillery counters your few tanks. That's about it, and you can't possibly get him out of the center now with the army you have.

And man do I need that line held: all of my games so far have been a decent fight that I still consistently lose and get pushed back on. Well, except for my one match on Frostleaf. I have to say though that believing in arty is what started my path to improvement, I went from being stuck at the 800s to reaching 1k by using arty in a way that helps me defend multiple properties.

I think Olaf was the wrong choice because against the best player on such a small map, with a CO that was so well-suited for this map (lots of plains, lots of good positions for artillery), a stall-focused CO wouldn't get a chance to shine because the match would be decided too quickly for it to matter. Max would definitely have been a better choice, IMO. Especially since Olaf wouldn't be getting any value until units started dying and power gauge started building, but by that point, a solid advantage could be gained by the best player in the world...not a good position.

does AWBW have different rating systems for different types of play like chess does, e.g. bullet, blitz, and rapid? Not denouncing the obvious skill of Incuggarch, but if he often takes 4-5 days to plan out moves, that's obviously a very different skillset than timed matches. having the opportunity to review and analyize all possible moves prior to deciding one seems very different than having to rapidly consider options and make a move before you lose the game (not to mention the irl counterpart that strategy games resemble). personally, I could never hold it together to play efficiently at top-level play if every turn took 5 days to rotate, but that's just my limited capabilities.

I never thought about it, but indirect units are really high reward units, and with that, I mean; When you use any direct combat unit, it gives and takes damage, so they slowly deteriorate over time. Indirect units, on another hand, don't have this issue other than maybe ammo, they only throw damage, and don't take back. If you can get a few shots with an indirect unit, it's already worth it, but with a direct unit, you would have to deal with the hidden costs of repairing it.
@davivilla5075

i feel like the main reason why you lost is because you lacked indirects the entire match, because of that your opponent could slowly march with a deathball and force you to attack it, making you in a bad position and without much choice, also, the neotank hit on the tank was greedy and your opponent knew how to punish that. But its nice to see your evolution through the time, looking at the old mangs, you can see you skyrocketed in skill since you started playing AWBW

Just wanna say, seeing that Olaf was Tier 2 on the thumbnail surprised me. Mainly because he’s an average CO who doesn’t buff or nerf anything, and is pretty much relying on his powers and Winter Fury in particular. Speaking of which, it’s even more surprising to me (albeit not by that much) because Drake actually is low tier, despite playing pretty much the exact same what with AWBW maps practically removing naval combat entirely. I guess either snow is just that good or, more likely, Drake’s weaker air units are just that bad. Oh, one more thing: only have campaign experience on this, but I totally agree with what you said about Jake here. Prior to Grit himself showing up in the campaign, if there was ever a mission where a team was relying on indirects-and there are a lot of those-Jake was the obvious choice. On that note, while Block Rock is terrifying for the power boost, I often found myself popping his normal power instead, since I just value the +1 indirect range you still get a lot more. Maybe someday I’ll try out playing him like that in AWBW, a Tier 4 who keeps popping his normal power to become Grit for a day. Edit: Ha! That double Beat Down Incuggarch did was exactly what I was talking about with Jake.

Well in snow Olaf doesn't get the negative movement plus he get a extra 10 or 20 percent in snow plus the global damage adds up and with no negatives he can trade fairly in most engagements. In rain drake gets a similar boost but he loses in the air to bad without a massive income over his opponent but then again anyone with more income will come out on top more often then not.

Would love to apply game theory to advance wars. See if there are any non intuitive moves like using your normal power for extra range.

Mangs, you say that it's not a good idea to play too passively against pro players, but I kinda feel like you did exactly that when you didn't take the red property on your side of the map when it was pretty much only guarded by the anti-air. Forcing his singular anti-air to move out of the center is a great use of an infantry, IMHO. Also, this passive thinking is the exact reason you picked Olaf in place of the vastly superior Max. Of course, I say this despite never playing AW competitively, so take it with a grain of salt.

This was one year ago... Starflash recently took 1st place. So, Incuggarch held it for over a year?

“Four days to make a move”? What does that mean? In game or taking that many days to make a move in real time?

It means he spent 3-4 IRL days in between each move. That's not to say he spent all of that time thinking, but he probably devoted up to several hours of thinking out each turn.
