Gutu - MDC A president Nelson Chamisa rose to the occasion on Wednesday last week by giving a fiery speech after initially being snubbed by Zanu PF at a family funeral.
Mourners were puzzled when, Benedict Gwede, the Assistant District Development Co-ordinator (DDC) for Gutu introduced everyone else at the top table and left out Chamisa during speeches at the burial of four of the five members of the Chagweda Family who perished in an accident two weeks ago.
Gwede went on to drop Chamisa from the list of speakers lined up to address 1 000 mourners gathered at Chikwati Village under Chief Chiwara in Gutu on Wednesday last week. Chamisa is not only a cousin to the deceased but he leads the biggest opposition party in the country.
When Chamisa eventually spoke, he broke into song and set the funeral alight with wild whistling and cheering. He then warned Zanu PF not to take rigging to funerals. He told Gwede that the soil he was standing on was sacred because it brought up fighters who even President Mnangagwa and Deputy Minister Lovemore Matuke were ‘afraid of’.
Gwede introduced all Government officials present at the funeral starting with Matuke who not only the most senior but he represented Mnangagwa. He introduced two other deputy ministers, Zanu PF DCC members, senior Police chiefs and Army captains right down to the lowest senior civil servants living Chamisa out.
Chamisa was rescued by Plaxedes Chagweda Chikondo, a spokesperson of the Chagwedas who rose and told Government officials that Chamisa was present by virtue of him being a senior member of the family. She said Chamisa was going to make a speech on behalf of the bereaved family.
“Chokutanga ndoda kuti Plaxedes nyaya yekurigana haina kunaka. Ini ndauya pano. Pano pane hurumende pane mapato saka ngatiremekedzei mitumbu iri umu (Plaxedes the first thing that I want to say is that rigging even at funerals is not right. We have Government and political parties present here and we must respect the dead,” said Chamisa.
He extolled the gathering to respect family relationships ahead of politics. He said politics was nothing compared to the bond of blood among people much to applause of the mourners
He said that the Zanu PF MP for the area (Gutu South) Pupurai Togarepi was his cousin and Togarepi attends the same Migidhi Church with Chamisa’s father. Matuke is an in-law- to him and therefore violence against each other was uncalled for. He said elections were like weddings where no one can play it alone.
“VaGwede ndaingonzwa zita renyu ndaona muri pano nhasi. Rukuvhute rwedu rwuri muno saka zivai makagara rukuvhute rwakaoma. Haisi nyore bvunzai vaMatuke navaMnangagwa vanoziva kuti muno makabva mvumba, zvikara, zvamunoona zviri kutaura pano. (I want to acknowledge the presence of Mr Gwede here. I only heard about you and am happy to see you face to face. I am pleased to tell you that this is our home where our umbilical cords are buried and the place is sacred. You are standing on sacred soil where brave men like myself come from. Ask this to President Mnangagwa and Mr Matuke, they will testify to you,” said Chamisa.
Chamisa then narrated his relationship with the Chagwedas by saying it was just the name but they were of the same family. He told mourners that his grandfather’s house was less than 30 metres from the Chagweda homestead.
