- Champion Driver (Amiga Game) - Formula Kart Mode Longplay -
Champion Driver is a racing game released in 1991 by the Italian software house Idea Software for the Amiga. The game allows players to compete in five different racing classes: Formula Kart, Sport Rally, Formula 3, Sport Prototype, and Formula 1, offering a diverse range of racing experiences.
Despite its obscure status, Champion Driver holds a nostalgic place in the hearts of some players, affectionately known as 'the one with the Pit Stop' (more on that later). The gameplay is fast-paced and increasingly challenging with each class, which helps maintain its longevity.
In hindsight, I consider the graphics and design, particularly the landscapes and car screens, poorly executed, even for their time. Yet, back then, maybe because I had just transitioned from the Commodore 64 to the Amiga, I found them impressive. In any case, credit is due to the developers for creating their own models without heavily drawing inspiration from existing designs.
One notable feature that stood out to players is the pit stop mechanic, where players must top up on fuel. This adds a strategic element to the races, especially on tracks where a single stop might not suffice. Players need to carefully manage fuel consumption while taking risks and avoiding collisions.
Overall, while Champion Driver didn't stand out as a top-tier racing game on the Amiga, it guarantees hours of fun with its varying levels of challenge and the different strategies required to emerge victorious in its several classes.
