Hawthorne wasn't exactly 100% A1 fit throughout his career? His various books hinted at this too.

Racing full out next to barbed-wire fences. Different breed than they have today. Can't even race in the rain.

How many great persons, not just 'drivers, were killed by irresponsible glory-bulimic racing car builders, do you agree Enzo? And you, Colin? 😡😡😡

My view is that Hawthorn deserved to win the 58 Championship. At both Spa and Monza officials possibly deeply unsympathetic to Hawthorn ruthless brilliant drive at Le Mans in 55, held the GP field on the line, quite likely deliberately hoping to damage Mike's clutch. Hawthorn should easily have won the Italian GP, he was a minute ahead of Brooks at three quarter distance, when Hawthorns clutch started to slip. Generally the Dino was the quicker car in 58, except in Holland ,Germany and Britain.

I think Moss deserved the '58 tittle, too. Note that Hawthorn won the tittle at the Ain-Diab GP (last one) because Phill Hill (who was in 2 position) let Mike pass though.

The point is the starter held the cars on the line with engines running for five minutes at Spa and Monza and no way did that help Hawthorn. Film commentary of 58 Belgium GP states that in practice Hawthorns Dino was far the fastest and most stable. But at Silverstone Collins beat Moss in a Ferrari less suited to the circuit than the Moss Vanwall. A point is that the Hawthorn, Collins and Stewart garages employed about 125 people each and were industrial. None of these gentlemen are remotely WC.
