The city's hospitality sector has a reason to be proud and that reason is Chanakya BNR Hotel, Ranchi.
The 91-year-old hotel, located near Ranchi station, has bagged four-star rating from the Hotel and Restaurant Approval and Classification Committee (HRACC) of the Union ministry of tourism, thus becoming the first hospitality address in the state capital to be classified by the ministry.
A seven-member team from HRACC had inspected the facility in March after the authorities sent it a detailed project report. After a month, the hotel, which comes under Timeshare Resorts and is gaining popularity as a destination for both leisure and family holidays, recently received a letter from the committee, informing that it has been awarded four-star status on account of the facilities provided by it.
"With the four-star rating, Chanakya BNR, Ranchi, has become the only classified hotel in the state capital, which is a remarkable achievement. We feel extremely proud as HRACC members were satisfied with the services we offer to our guests, who are not only tourists but also top-notch business executives," said Sudhir Mishra, resident manager of the hotel.
However, Mishra rued that they would have got five-star status but for a swimming pool. "We have already started constructing a swimming pool that will be completed shortly," he said, adding the rating would be effective for five years. He also hoped that the hotel would now draw more guests with its improved standing.
Earlier known as Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) Hotel, the hospitality address was taken over by Chanakya chain of hotels in 2007 and eventually came to be known as Chanakya BNR Hotel, Ranchi. In 2009, a major renovation project was taken up with the objective of providing the best facilities to guests.
Spread over five acres, the hotel has 89 standard and deluxe rooms, suites and conference and reception halls by the names Darbar, Utsav, Vatika, Upwan and an executive lounge. The multi-cuisine restaurant Samrat and Mehfil bar take care of the sip and bite section while the newly opened Oriental Kitchen offers Chinese cuisine along with the best dining facilities.
All rooms are equipped with wireless Internet connection, satellite TV and fire-fighting gadgets.
There is also a heritage wing, which boasts 14 British-style rooms with huge verandahs and reclining chairs for guests. It also provides other facilities like a health club, travel agents, car rental and parking space for over 125 vehicles.
Regular visitors swear by the hotel's services. "Not only food, room service is also really good. What particularly impressed us is that the management retained the old-world charm of the place during renovation. The heritage rooms are a throwback to the British culture," said Mitali Sinha, a guest.
