"I wonder if this battery is going to fit?" hammering sounds, "yep"

Mr Geezer, how does the 'brace' at the top of the battery attach to the bottom? I've succeeded at changing the battery (car starts fine) but for the life of me the two bolts on the brace seem too small to reach the holes below (back is fine, front too short). Am I missing something really basic here?

I've just had a look to refresh my memory and, on ours, at the front and rear of the battery tray, there is a vertical tab with a hole in it. The hooks on the threaded rods on the battery clamp hook into those holes. I hope that helps.

Is that car a positive earth one? I have always disconnected the "earth" first then the other one. Here in the states that would be the negative cable first.

No, it's a negative ground. I've not seen a positive ground on any car later than the '50s 🙂

Agreed, on a negative earth vehicle it's -ve off first and replace last, that way you won't short the +ve if your spanner/ratchet touches the engine/chassis.

@@SteamGeezerUK My first car was an Austin 1300 estate from the mid 70s. It had a positive earth, which was a right pain fitting a cassette player into it. There was a certain amount of smoke.

You were expecting decent electrics from a British car...? That's cute. We all know British wiring looms were made of string and spit 🙂@@ianthomson9363

I will now have to buy the wife a Honda Jazz with a flat battery to see if this works. ;-)

Twin boom aircraft? It wasn't a vampire. Vampires were jets. The thing you heard was prop driven. It was possibly an old Lockheed P-38 Lightning from WW2. Very rare, but there may be one in the UK.

Its up to you, but I would put it on charge overnight as new batteries need to be topped up to be fully charged.

I was actually surprised it started the way it did. I was expecting to have to charge it, but it was apparently ready to go. I remember buying batteries years ago and having to wait for the guy to actually pour acid into them as they were stored dry, then having to charge it for hours before you could use the thing. This one was sitting quite happily at 12v straight from the shelf.

Yeah, I'm from that era as well. So, I was probably wasting my time charging my sealed AGM battery that I bought recently, though I do keep my motorcycles on battery tenders, as that have alarm immobilisers on them.

Girly here that knows nothing at all about cars. I have however, managed to take off the battery and trickle charge it. Now im panicking about re-fitting it. I took all the bolts off with pliers 😭. Was just checking up the order to re-fit. Bracket. Then neg and finally positive. Now im scared about using my pliers 😮 Yes it took ages 😅😅😅

You might be better off getting yourself a cheap little toolkit from somewhere. You need a 10mm spanner for basically everything on a Jazz battery, although. Most DIY places sell little toolkits with basic tools to get you started 🙂

Honestly, working on her car feels like working on a model. Everything is tiny and crammed in... 🙂
