Before the actual Channel 5 television service was launched in Britain, I half expected its on-screen brand identity to look similar to this video clip. It does have a good futuristic vibe to it which I like.

I actually do recognise this vhs label. It was been used on a home video release of Dougal and the blue cat, my mum had this on vhs during the 1990s.

I can only assume they called the label Channel 5 as a play on the fact that there were only 4 TV channels in the UK at the time. The video recorder and your tapes are like a channel 5, of course when the actual channel 5 was launched the name became redundant.

Until recently, if you looked up anything they released on the BBFC’s website, it clearly stated that the company has no connection to the broadcaster of the same name!

Yeah, Channel 5 was a sublabel of Polygram launched at the start of the sell through era, they also had deals with other labels that were around during the pre cert era (such as Embassy, who owned the rights to The Howling, Escape from New York etc). Selling off films at the budget price of £10 or under (and keep in mind videotapes still cost upwards of £40 back then). Eventually Polygram launched new budget labels such as Spectrum and 4 Front and Channel 5 became a label dedicated to kids stuff, until Universal brought them out.
@interstat2222

It was PolyGram’s attempt to take on The Video Collection. A retail (sell through) label for catalogue titles, something which was new then, as most people just rented films. The Video Collection had just launched (in collaboration with Woolworths) and PolyGram wanted a slice of the retail video pie, initially using this label ‘Channel 5’ for music videos (after all, PolyGram was part of a record label, all owned by Philips!). Later it became Spectrum and eventually 4Front, which even continued for a few years in the early 2000s after everything PolyGram has been sold to Universal.
