Lyrics below:
"Chanson d'Automne" ("Autumn Song") is a poem by Paul Verlaine, published in 1866. In 1940, Charles Trenet made a song out of it.
During World War II, lines from the poem were used to send messages to the French Resistance about the timing of the forthcoming Invasion of Normandy.
Don't forget to keep the spirit of resistance alive and don't ever fall in line with the status quo without questioning the motives of the people/ systems in power. Keep your critical thinking alert.
Les sanglots longs
Des violons
De l'automne
Blessent mon cœur
D'une langueur
Monotone.
Tout suffocant
Et blême, quand
Sonne l'heure,
Je me souviens
Des jours anciens
Et je pleure;
Et je m'en vais
Au vent mauvais
Qui m'emporte
Deçà, delà,
Pareil à la
Feuille morte.
In English:
The long sobs
Of violins
Of autumn
Hurt my heart
With a monotonous
Languor.
All breathless
And pale, when
The hour sounds,
I remember
Former days
And I cry;
And I go
In the ill wind
Which carries me
Here, there,
Like the
Dead leaf.
