They mentioned King of the Hill as a sort of a touchstone for comparison and I gotta say, it made me think about how KotH actually presented a very human and dignified side of conservatives while also being good-natured enough to to poke fun at the silly sides of both sides of the aisle. That show made me think, as a kid, that conservatives like Hank were very approachable and could be reasoned with and talked to on equal and untainted footing. Conservatives now would *_never_* portray themselves as humanely and gracefully as someone like Hank Hill is. If the Daily Wire tried to make a KotH they would never allow Hank to be wrong sometimes and learn from people who are opposite him politically, they would have nothing but contempt for every member of his family except maybe Cotton, they’d never portray a healthy family dynamic because they don’t know what one is anymore.

Mr. Birchum: sees his son living at home, earning an income by streaming video games. Berates him for not having an "actual job" and complains to his wife what a failure he thinks his son is. You can watch Billy Madison, or Happy Gilmore and sure he's an entitled jerk, but just as many of the jokes are at his expense as are at others. Then you go to later efforts like Ridiculous Six (which has a litany of other issues as well) or That's My Boy and Sandler's character doesn't have any humor or fault called on him. He gets to do what he wants and others are the butt of the joke. And Carolla doesn't get NEARLY the same leeway I'd give Sandler. There's a cameo from Adam Carolla. He is doing a meet and greet at the tool convention but no one is in line so he approaches birchum and goes "don't you want an Adam Carolla autograph" and Mr birchum eyes him up so you are like "oh boy here it comes he is about to say something mean" and birchum goes "I tought Gilbert Godfrey was dead" Adam makes a sad face and birchum walks away. I'm obsessed with this joke. What does it mean?

Adam Carolla vaguely resembles the late comedian Gilbert Gottfried in both appearance and comedic style so Birchum mixed them up. It is supposed to be self deprecating of Adam himself. The irony is that the very comedian who created the show and voices Birchum is not being recognized by the character he created.

@@robertmakins5070 but does he though? Because they are both guys with raspy voices? Also in any case how is it self deprecating? He is comparing himself to one of the most iconic comics of his generation. Like "haha Mr Birchum doesn't know who Adam Carolla is so he confuses him with the late iconic Gilbert Godfrey". How is that an insult towards Adam Carolla? If anything it's an insult towards Gilbert Godfrey. The joke baffles me for those reasons. I know I'm over thinking this and that the joke is actually "haha Mr birchum doesn't know who Adam Carolla is" but like comparing him to Gilbert Godfrey is still probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said about Adam Carolla, unless: does Adam Carolla actually thinks of himself as above Gilbert Godfrey for some reason? Thus making the comparison an actual insult to him. Why would he think something like that? I think about this a lot.

It's actually really sad. Carolla used to use this character to satirize boomer-ass toxic masculinity. But now he thinks the only way he can get work is to use this character to promote that very culture, which he knows is wrong. A true case of living long enough to become the villain.

1:07:20 Alonzo Bodden is pretty funny, won a season of Last Comic Standing and he's great on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. They had a red carpet for the premiere and Bodden said that comedy didn't go anywhere and cancel culture isn't real, which is not something that right wingers like to hear. Also, the voice actors need to make a living, so whatevs.

Family guy episodes from this year are more funny, better animated, better written, and more edgy than anything this can offer. Faimily guy writers kind of gave up and don't care, thats how it stayed relevant. Also, daily wire needs to keep anything Mike Judge has made out of their fucking mouths. These hacks wish they could be half as funny as King of the hill. Genuinely, how dare they even compare themselves to it.

I love that Washington Examiner review that exposes how conservative shows nowadays make these self-insert OCs who are never shown to have meaningful flaws. Yes, Birchum is a total asshole but it DOESN'T MATTER because he always has to be right in order to pander to the conservative audience that wants its views validated. Indeed, he's nothing like Peter Griffin or Bart Simpson, and that's because they are allowed to be wrong and face a comeuppance for their opinions and bad actions, like Birchum bullying the kids and making them do free labor.

The whole concept of the Mr Birchum might be the most played out one in all of animated/sitcom television. The white "blue collar" father trying to deal with his kids and wife and a world which is becoming increasingly foreign. That show has been done in multiple forms now. Seriously if you really want to do something new and original in this genre do the first generation immigrant who's raising his American born kids in a society and culture that is not the one he came up in. There's a lot of potential. Father from India who is Hindu has to learn to deal with his daughters' Pakistani boyfriend whose family is Muslim. I'd actually like to see that.
