I’ve been working on this theory all week but here goes. The reason that no one connects the now attacks with the attacks from 50 years ago is because Myrtle was the only victim. We never explicitly hear that anyone was petrified the first time. We only learn that The Chamber has been open before from Draco. Draco learns this from Lucius. Lucius learns this from Voldy. We also know that Riddle couldn’t take credit for the attacks in 1942, so that could mean it was never referred to as “Slytherin’s Monster” or referred to as “The Chamber of Secrets.” Hence why Binns says that it is legend, no one thinks it’s a basilisk since there is no similarity between the attacks, and they just assume Hagrid because monsters. Thoughts?
@raevalentine9002
6 ай бұрын
I think this theory works, because back then, Riddle was doing the attacks In person (via basilisk command)... he wouldn't have wanted to petrify anyone, and leave 'evidence'. The reason students are being petrified now, are because they were forewarned (messages on the wall, Ms. Norris being a cat, Nick being a ghost, also being attacked via proxy (Ginny) So there were more chances for error and Riddle was trying to catch Harry's attention so he was being more flashy and less death-y to start

@@raevalentine9002 The reason students are being petrified now is because no one looked directly into the basilisk's eyes. Mrs. Norris was petrified because she saw the basilisk's reflection in the water that was on the floor, not because she's a cat. The messages on the wall are intended to both spread fear, and to get the muggle-borns to leave the school. It seems like Myrtle was killed essentially because otherwise she would have known where the Chamber of Secrets was.

I have a pretty simple theory as to why Dumbledore took the camera melting as evidence of the chamber of Secrets being opened again. As the Carlin bros have pointed out previously, the signs that the monster was a basilisk feel very obvious in hindsight. So my guess is Dumbledore actually suspected all along that Slytherin’s monster was a basilisk, he just never voiced it to or around the golden trio. Knowing what the monster is doesn’t necessarily make it easier to find the chamber though, so that’s why he still couldn’t stop it. So when he saw the camera melted, it confirmed the theory he already had which is that petrification had to do with vision (as opposed to a spell or potion or something). This confirmed it to be a basilisk for Dumbledore, which in turn confirmed that it really is Slytherin’s monster making the attacks, which confirmed that the Chamber of Secrets really is open again.
@IdaSantti

I agree, it is too out of character for Dumbledore to have NO IDEA, what the monster is. Not finding the Chamber is okay, but having no idea what is in it, considering everything he knows about everything. No, just no

What I find most interesting about reenacting Lockhart's books is that these are things that did happen, they just didn't happen to Lockhart. Giving grapes in the uk is a given when someone is in hospital, often along with lucazade 🤣🤣 Grapes used to be a rarity in the uk, so a luxury. It could be a sign of status and concern for the person in hospital. Also, in the 19th century, there was a belief that grapes had the power to cleanse and purify the body, especially the blood. They believed that the natural sugars and vitamins could boost the immune system and help the healing process. In Victorian Britain, it was believed that after a medical issue, people needed a period of “convalescence” in which they ate only light, easily digestable food. Grapes were considered ideal for this, as they were sweet, easy on the stomach, and full of water (thereby aiding in hydration). As the Colin is British and a muggle-born, it totally makes sense to us British muggles that Colin brings Harry some grapes! Loved your story for this though!! ❤️

When it comes to the professional Quidditch teams, I think the big difference is that quidditch is a lot more like auto racing than something like baseball or soccer, where you're participating in the game is extremely aged dependent. Likely many of these professional quidditch players are much older than your standard muggle athlete because they are mostly just writing on a broom and not exerting themselves quite as proficiently as other sports. So the fact that Oliver wood is only on the reserve team likely means that the keeper of Puddlemere United is much more experience than he is.

I feel like what Lockhart is saying with the werewolf is basically what the wolfsbane potion does, it doesn't stop you from transforming but it stops you from having to worry about attacking people

And why wouldn't Lockhart be able to tell Hermione is the best witch of her generation? It's not like he's exceptionally dumb or anything, he is just a fraud. Possibly slightly blow average at spells other than memory charms but I think pretty much anyone would be able to tell Hermione is the best in the class.

Love the still shot with the elixir of life image over, very cozy and inviting. I wanna curl up and take a nap in that room. Do you think it’s possible Dumbledore told Lockhart he wanted him there to guide Harry? And Dumbledore, in his wisdom, knows how Lockhart will blow it, and how Harry will respond to Lockhart’s ridiculousness?

I have a theory about why the bludger stopped attacking during the timeout but not at the end! If dobby saw them taking a timeout, he may have thought harry was stopping the game to quit/leave school. And gave him a chance to do so. Then the game continues and by the end it becomes clear to dobby that there is no chance harry will quit without injury and so even though the game is over, he doesnt back off this time. Committed, at that point, to getting harry to leave no matter what. Thanks for all the awesome work you do, absolutely love this podcast! Ps. My wife, daughter and i read each chapter together before we listen to the corresponding episode!

45:23 Quidditch Through the Ages confirmed that it does 45:54 I don't think it is officially confirmed, but that is how it is played IRL in Muggle Quidditch

At the thought of Dumbledore sneeking out at night to bring Harry some hot chocolate, I just cantthink the incredibly funny scenario, early Dumbledore, especially Stone and Chamber Dumbledore, used to be so incredibly goofy to me as a child, like "Mr. Creavy, what are you doing out of your common room at this late of an hour??" "Ohhh.. Professor Dumbledore...sir.....I.....was about to bring Harry some grapes...?" "GREAT, I was about to bring him some hot coco...come after me ~" XD Like

I literally just realized that your Dumbledore’s big plan theory makes sense not necessarily because thats what AD wanted to teach Harry, but because of what JKR wanted to show the reader…

On the topic of Quidditch hoops , while certainly noncanon, I recall on the video game Quidditch World Cup that certain teams’ ‘super moves’ involved scoring and then immediately passing the quaffed to another teammate to score again within seconds of each other.

Favorite Book: Goblet of Fire Favorite Movie: Half Blood Prince I think that the Death Day party chapter showed that Harry Potter Chapters are like pizza, even a bad slice of pizza is still pizza and therefore enjoyable

So quidditch things: Yes the quaffle falls slowly. It has a magical charm that I can’t remember the name of on it. Just like how the snitch is enchanted to stay within the boundries of the field. If you can, I would suggest playing the quidditch game on the PS2. I don’t remember in actual lore how it goes, but in the game after a score happens, your keeper throws the quaffle to your chasers and you begin to rush the goals on the other side.

I always took it that nothing can retain the image of the Basilisk, instant death for those that look direct in it's eyes, Petrification for those that see a reflection, but no memory of the creature itself. The scorch marks, I assume, were below the part of the puddle that reflected the Basilisks eyes back at Mrs. Norris, similar to a magnifying glass, but a magical effect rather than directed heat, that's why only the film in Colin's camera was melted but not the view lenses or the rest of the camera.

Dumbledore wasn't out for hot Choco, he was looking for the one who attacked Mrs. Norris. When he finds Creevey he uses the Homenum Revelio spell. Since the spell does not detect humans in the vicinity, Dumbledore assumes that the one attacking people is the monster in the Chamber of Secrets and not any human.

Hello J and Ben. I listen to your podcast ever week after i get home from school and love it. I really like the way that you go into depth about the chapters and how i lean something every ep. It bright joy to me every Monday (I live in New Zealand so that is the day that the podcast comes out). You know how Harry takes the eye from the minister in the Deathly Hallows and you guys have a theory that Moody's eye is the eye of the fates which can see the Hallows. What if Harry kept the eye when taking it from the minister or Dumbledore gave Harry the eye in his will instead of giving it to Moody after taking it from Grindelwald. How would this affect the story given that Harry can see through walls and see the Hallows?
