In this episode, Cosmin Man, technical director, will give us useful information about charge controllers for photovoltaic systems on caravans and motorhomes.
These regulators take the current generated by the panel and inject it into the battery.
Why do we need a regulator?
A solar panel generates a current with a voltage of about 20-23 V, and our batteries are at 12 V, which means they need a charging current of about 14.4 V. To do this we need a device to bring this current down to that value, at that voltage. If we were to inject directly from the panel without any regulator, then we would end up overcharging the battery and very quickly breaking it down, and an overcharged battery even poses the risk of explosion and fire.
There are two broad categories: PWM regulators or MPPT regulators. More information in the video.
