The Intelligence of this move is clear; you cannot get emotional about players. As a charger fan of 45 years, of course I hate seeing Allen go. But Mack took a paycut, Bosa took a paycut, Keenan didn't. Teams that finish with 5-6 wins and little cap space have to hit the reset button and that's what Hortiz and Harbaugh are doing. They now have a high amount of cap space, can be free agent buyers and comfortably sign whomever they draft next months.

The weirdness of Florio wanting it to be more like NBA where player’s wants mean more than sensible team building and coaching….is so damn strange. And I get it, we all need the clicks and views. But maybe you should put your energy toward helping the player’s build a more equitable CBA. Assuring the pension and healthcare that they deserve. Making sure there is not 18th regular season game. Getting them a second bye week. The idea that we need more drama, and that players who have not played a down in the NFL should get unlimited autonomy. That’s just stupid.

Interesting idea. But I'm not really sure what quarterback is going to be available at 5 that wouldn't also probably be available at 11. May, Williams and Daniels likely will all be gone by then. So the only way this would make sense for the Vikings is if they did this trade after the fourth pick if there is still one of those three quarterbacks available. And then for the Chargers is it really worth it to give a super duper expensive contract to one player? I mean I'd rather get three to four solid players on the roster with that money, I think..lol. And I'm also saying this because in NFL history, having a superstar wide receiver has commonly not been associated with super bowl wins. Moss never won one, TO never won, etc.

@@jayem3720 I didn't say it never happens. Of course it does. But there's also plenty of teams that win without superstar wide receivers. My point is that it is not ironclad necessary to make these kinds of moves. My point is that I'm not sure that the best thing for the Chargers to do would be to trade a very high draft pick for Justin Jefferson. Not only would it not see him in line with what Harbaugh seems to be doing, I'm just not sure that It's the best trade for us right now. We are in a rebuild, clearly, even if it's a competitive rebuild. And when you are rebuilding that's not generally when you sign extremely lucrative contracts and give up high picks for one dude. I'm very aware of those players success, And I would also point out that as NFL offense has evolved, and as it has become much easier to have offensive success in the NFL because of the way the game and the rules have changed, this is why it has become less and less necessary to have a superstar wide receiver. That's also a reality of how the game has changed. It's not that you wouldn't like a superstar wide receiver, of course you would. But In the modern age of favorable offensive rules, there are ways to build the offense in an extremely effective way that don't involve pain beyond top dollar for one receiver

I've been a Jets fan since Heidi. When I moved to the Pacific NW a few years ago, I wanted a West Coast team to be able to see a few games on TV. Having had enough of Geno Smith with the Jets, I chose the Chargers. Seems I picked Jets West. Kinda the opposite twin. Jets haven't had a QB since Namath. The Chargers had QBs (Hadl, Fouts, Brees briefly, Rivers and now Herbert) but nothing much else. And both teams suffer from the same horrible wtf situations. Jets had Kotite, Chargers had Staley. For example. They're mirror image teams! lol

Jim is about to trade Justin Herbert to my Raiders and chargers is gonna draft JJ McCarthy with the 5th overall pick 🤷🏾♂️ Harbaugh just won a championship with this guy said he was one of the greatest QB he “ ever “ coached 🤔 Tom Telesco and Herbert back together and Jim gets what he wanted maybe 2 first round picks to build around JJ McCarthy

Nope, not a foundational player according to Harbaugh or Bill Walsh for that matter. The wide receiver is the LAST piece when building a championship team.

Harbaugh is constantly talking about team work, being a good teammate, elevating your teammates. I think Harbaugh thought Allen was just too “me me”. Mack and Bosa agreed and are team players. When I saw Allen’s press conference all I heard was me me me me!

It’s a lot of money for a WR who’ll be 32 when the season starts. He’s got 1 year left on his deal, so a “restructure” of his contract would mean an extension. How long and how much are you willing to invest in a WR already in his 30’s? In a deep WR draft the Chargers will be able to get someone pretty good in the 2nd round at #37 overall if they decide to go that way. Who knows, maybe they go WR at #5 overall if there’s someone they love there?🤷🏻♂️

Allen and Williams were the top 2 for like forever. Williams was hurt 12-14 games last year. Of course Keenan Allen had lots of receptions??. He is old in the tooth and Harbaugh has a plan for the next 5 years and Keenan Allen is not part of those plans. He could have been but he said in the past that he wants to be with the Chargers and of course win a Super Bowl with Herbert but he was not $$ friendly. He wanted his and he wanted it now. Harbaugh basically said "Sometimes you just need to rip the band-aid off". Justin Herbert will make any receiver look great. Lets circle back after the draft Florio :). Then and only then we can evaluate the situation.

You can be the Cowboys who keep hanging on to a quarterback. Pay him over 200 million. This not gonna win you anything Or shall I call them? The Dallas Browns the Dallas Bengals or the Dallas cardinals

You only got a fourth round, pick in return for a guy who’s still in his prime. I don’t care how much money he makes that’s totally awful. Outside of the Russell Wilson trade to Denver, This is the worst trade I’ve seen since d hop Arizona. Good organizations find ways around the salary cap no matter what. I’m no Chargers fan but I don’t know what they’re doing here. Keenan Allen is easily worth a second round pick and a 3

4th round pick??? What a deal for the Bears. As far as who will Herbert throw to? Romans already said they will be a run offense. Another wasted year for Herbert. I hope I’m wrong.

Why are you guys pretending like the draft isn’t about to happen? Malik Nebors or Brock bowers will be just sitting there at 5 where the Chargers pick. Either one would be a huge upgrade over Keenan Allen.

The Bears would be smart to trade the #1 pick for Herbert. It would also give the Chargers a complete reset as they could pair Williams and Harrison Jr. But it'll never happen, because as we all know - Chargers gonna charger.

I think they would like to get the Herbert cap poison of 2027/28 reduced with a restructuring toward this year. About the time you have a team that can get to a Super Bowl, you have a QB you wonder is worth the money, and if not you have to start over again.

To diminish Herbo the way this what’s her name did shows her Chargers ignorance. 4 years of record breaking performance. One player can’t min games. They were losing with all of these tools healthy. A change had to occur.

The Chargers found a way to get out from under the dead cap money. Extending pushes it down the road. A new regime wouldn’t want to put themselves in that corner. Bear can afford the hot for one year and have a veteran to help a drafted receiver and possibly even either young quarterback.

Keenan Allen is not a superstar anymore. He's still a great player, but at some point you need less slot receiver and more explosive weapons. I'm thinking it's going to be a lot of ground and pound and then play action deep passes - that's not Allen's bread and butter. He's a slot.

The draft allows bad teams to get better. Destroying it just leads to everyone becoming free agents and that leads to veteran players having their careers cut short.

I know this is the season where teams magically move money around but the salary cap is a real thing. The chargers are perfectly positioned to get the best pass catcher and start fresh why pay Allen 21 mil over 30 years of age.
