I assume that since you can use a voltmeter on both batteries parallel and then also read the charge state on each battery separately that you could also charge them individually. connected in parallel the batteries will equalize between cells.in my understanding if you charged only one of the batteries and not the other.

Battery management system is needed. Internal resistance of each battery is different. A battery with lower internal resistance will draw more current. This higher current may destroy one battery while the other battery is undercharged and sulphated. While not charging, the battery with higher voltage will supply the one with lower voltage, disharging. 2 batteries are the same

Dangerous Video: You have been warned. Important missing information that could cause fires. First; test charge each battery BEFORE you connect in Parallel. NEVER connect "unknown" batteries in this way. Once you have BOTH at a known high level of equal charge, the cells can be connected WITH A FUSE!!!!!!! Use a 50-100 AMP to avoid fires. Fuse BOTH from and between the batteries. With these fuse protection in place, if one cell in one battery dies, the fuse will save the battery bank. You will STILL lose charge if one battery is at a lower temperature than the "pair". This happens for example when the car starting battery is in parallel with the "house" battery.
@davidjames1684
2 жыл бұрын
Even with fuses there can be issues. Suppose for example you have 10 AGM batteries all connected in parallel and 1 goes bad. You might have 60A fuses between them but the bad battery doesn't drain any of the other 9 quickly enough to blow any of the fuses. You wind up with a dead battery bank and all 10 batteries wind up in the scrapyard.
@myCloudWatcher
2 жыл бұрын
@@davidjames1684 I totally agree...
@davidjames1684
2 жыл бұрын
@@myCloudWatcher My point is fuses wont save the bank in that case. A large parallel bank has to me closely monitored to make sure no single battery is sucking too much "juice" from the others. If, for example, a solar system uses lots of paralleled batteries, simply checking the bank voltage often is better than nothing. For example, for a large 12V battery bank, if you see 12.8V bank voltage early in the morning before the sun comes up, you can be fairly confident that none of the batteries are bad. The only "certain" way to monitor this and prevent bad things from happening would not be easy. You would have to change the fuses at night and then again as the sun comes up. For example, for a 10 AGM battery parallel solar setup, if the max load is known to be about 3000 watts, that is 250A at 12V, or roughly 25A per battery. 25A fuses could be used or maybe make them 30A in case the load is not spread out evenly between the 10 batteries. At night, when it is known the load will be close to 0A, why not replace all the fuses with 5A fuses so if one battery goes bad and tried to draw 5+ amps from a "neighbor" battery, it will then blow the fuse? This however is a hassle so people don't do it. Generally, NO fuses are used.
@davidjames1684
2 жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider is how the 2 batteries are connected. If you use thick wires then yes, it is possible 60A (or even more) can flow briefly, but that wont sustain because one battery will have a rapid voltage increase and the other will have a rapid voltage sag and then the current flow will be greatly reduced. One way around this (connecting 2 batteries with a substantially different state of charge (SoC)), is to just add some series resistance between them. For example, if one battery is at 13.0V and the other is at 12.0V, that is a voltage differential of 1.0V. If you add a 0.1 ohm resistor (or just a piece of wire that is 0.1 ohm), then you are guaranteed to draw no more than 10A (10 amps) which is a much more reasonable charge rate for a battery that is say 50Ah rated.

If your two batteries are identical, purchased together and have been discharged together, then it is preferable to charge them together also. They are a "pair" and should be treated almost as if they were one battery. RVs have them discharged and charged together. It is not recommended to take two batteries that are not a " mated identical pair" at the same state of discharge and charge them together in parallel. Charge them separately. Otherwise one will be overcharged and the charger will also not respond correctly.

@davidjames9935

I can answer that for you. Generally speaking, an automatic charger will have a certain "happy" range it wants to work in. For example, a battery charger might be rated for a battery bank between 150Ah and 305Ah. If your battery bank is too small (let's say 100Ah), then you might charge them too quickly, possibly harming the batteries due to excessive heating. If the battery bank is too large (such as 500Ah in this example), the charger might not see enough voltage increase over time and may think the battery bank is bad and shut itself down. So to answer your question... I would try it first with your existing charger but expect about twice as long charge times from a similar state of charge (SoC). For example, 2 batteries in parallel at 50% SoC should take about twice as long to charge vs. a single battery at 50% SoC (assuming identical batteries). If it works and you are ok with the longer charging times then you are done. If you want more speed and/or there is a problem charging due to the charger complaining (likely due to the bank is too large), then upgrade your charger to something more powerful. My advice is to have multiple chargers so you can do more things with them and handle more charging scenarios. It is sometimes fun to blast a battery bank at a high charge current but sometimes if I am not in a hurry I can slow charge a battery overnight for 12 hours. Batteries generally tend to prefer slow charges in the 12 hour (or so) range. However, for something like in between rounds of golf, you may only have a 1 hour opportunity to partially recharge so that is a case where you might want to blast the batteries with charge current equalling about 20% of their AH rating (such as blasting a 260Ah battery with about 52 amps for 1 hour). If you use a high charge rate, make sure your batteries can handle it (ask the manufacturer to be more sure), and monitor the batteries in case there are problems. Do NOT leave them unattended for very long. If you feel the terminals getting very hot or detect some other problems (such as the battery case getting excessively hot), stop the charge or at least reduce the charge current significantly (like to half or less). Batteries are fun to play with but can be dangerous if misused.

You forgot to mention the batteries should be about the same Ah capacity. Also you didn't mention the same state of health. A unhealthy battery (that is 12V) put in parallel with a healthy 12V battery might NOT increase the capacity so that statement is wrong without stating the necessary exclusions.

bajatmerc They do differ slightly. There is a slight resistance in the cables you use to parallel the two batteries, this will cause slightly more current to go to the one than into the other. By placing the charging cables across batteries, they cancel each other out (if they are the same length).

Whatttt Is An Equalizing Chargeeee, Why Is It Needed, And How to Apply One To a Lead Acid Battery > t.co/3ycayBV4e1?bfvLcTxgvzoad
@davidjames9935
8 жыл бұрын
This causes some problems so why would you ever want to do this? in your example, if one battery takes 7 hours to charge and 2 batteries in parallel takes 13 hour to charge using the same charger, why not just charge them individually to get a better charge? Better yet why not get 2 chargers and give them each a dedicated charger? That is what I normally do. Also you mentioned nothing about how long to let the 2 batteries connected in parallel stay connected before attempting to charge. For example, if one battery is at 50% Soc (State of Charge) and the other happens to be at 75% SoC, connecting them in parallel and letting them sit for maybe 15 minutes before attempting to charge them should give them more time to equalize rather than attempting to charge say 1 minute after the parallel connection is made. Also you say to use same gauge cables but that is not so critical as long as they can handle the charge current. Also using the shortest cables possible is not needed as it is not critical either. You could use car jumper cables for example and it should still work fine. Some of this "advice" is questionable.

+David James Hi David. We always recommend charging batteries independently, or in as small of systems as possible, because the closest you can get to charging at cell level, the better. However, this video simply explains if it makes sense per application to charge two batteries at once. Perhaps it's more convenient or someone only has one charger. It's great that you already charge separately and have more than one charger! That is good information to let the batteries equalize, and the video could be expanded to include that. We do suggest similar wire gauges and short cables as power is lost over distance and uneven cable gauge can put a strain on the smaller cables. Of course, using cables that are larger than the application's requirements doesn't hurt anything, but people often underestimate the power batteries can deliver. We appreciate your detailed feedback and will keep it in mind as we are always trying to improve our information and support.

***** Regarding letting parallel battery hookup sit for a while before charging.... It is not totally necessary if you will be charging but useful when the batteries are off the charger. For example, I have 2 large AGM batteries and I tested them recently. One was at 12.9 and the other was at 12.7. One is not in as good health as the other. When I paralleled them and checked the voltage, they were both then at 12.8V after only about 1 minute.

The "logic" here is whacked. If it takes 7 hours to charge 1 battery and 13 hours to charge 2 paralleled identical batteries, why not just charge one first and then charge the 2nd one? It will likely give them both a better charge that way. The only possible advantage I see is if you wan the charge process to run thru by itself from start to finish without having to move the charger from 1 battery to the other (like overnight when you are sleeping). However, this is a compromise between convenience and quality of charge. You also didn't mention certain things to watch out for such as a small charger that is pretty much "maxed out" with a single large battery may fail at trying to charge 2 of those batteries paralleled. Chargers generally have a certain Ah range of batteries they are designed to charge. If you exceed that (by paralleling 2 or more batteries), the charger may abort early in the charge process and not give your batteries much charge so if you were to wake up the next morning (after attempting to parallel charge overnight), you might be disappointed to see that you have to wait another 14 hours to charge them separately.

Obviously these 2 buffoons don't quite know what they are talking about. You do NOT have to use the same gauge wire in a parallel connection of 2 batteries, nor do the wires have to be the same length (and technically they never are exactly the same). The one guy (the buffoon on the viewers left) even refers to them as cables which they are not. He stated it takes 7 hours to charge a single 40Ah battery but 13 hours to charge 2 of them in parallel but failed to mention from what state of charge. If they were already at 90% charged, it would take much less time to top them off that last 10%. Way too many wrong things going on in this video for them to have credibility.

Oh I will. What a bunch of crap about the cables having to be the same gauge. The entire charge circuit sees all the wires as a single electrical loop so if you have 10 gauge cables on the negative and 12 gauge wire on the positive and/or different length wires, who cares? The charge circuit will see the total resistance of the circuit (including the resistance of the battery itself). As long as the wire gauge is thick enough to safely carry the charge current, mixing wire gauges is perfectly fine. I do it often and it works like a champ. You guys seem somewhat clueless. I didn't know it was possible to make so many wrong statements in a little over 1 minute. When connecting two 12 volt" batteries in parallel, the voltage stays the same. No it doesn't. Isn't that why some people need jump starts in cars? If what you said was true, jump starting a car, one 12V battery to another, would do nothing. Of course the voltage changes, either a minute amount or in the jump start scenario with one very weak battery, a large amount (several volts). Downvoted for major inaccuracy. Your thumbs down ratio for this presentation is almost 18%. What does that tell you? Also, those are not battery cables. I don't think you know what a cable is. Do me a favor, before making a video like this, please know what you are talking about first. That doesn't seem to be the case here.
