When Bavaria’s ruling family died out in 1777, the country was inherited by the Elector Palatine, a member of the same dynasty, but from a different branch. In this way, the Palatinate and Bavaria were united under the same ruler for the first time in over 400 years - but there was a problem. The Elector Palatine, Charles Theodore, wasn’t interested in Bavaria, and would soon agree to give away nearly half the country to the neighbouring Habsburgs.
