20:38 I loved the reviews up till here. I think you've misunderstood the original intention of the song. It was not a diss track by any means, it was a song exploring the dichotomous nature of female relationships, especially as they exist in a tenuous and competitive state within the music industry. Not a diss track at allllll, more like introspection, assumptions, and vulnerability

I had the exact same thoughts the first time I heard her verse on 'I Got It'. This idea was finally cemented when I heard her remix of Caroline Polachek's 'Welcome to my Island'. That remix was life changing and she's practically spitting verse after verse autotuned to the heavens, straight up a rapper (I have very selective rap knowledge)

There's singing and there's speaking and there's rapping, and you can do all three in the context of a hip-hop track or you can do it in the context of a pop song. Rapping doesn't mean it's a hip-hop song, it means you're emphasis is on the meter and rhythm of your flow, not the melody. Tyler, The Creator is a rapper, and his album Igor is a hip-hop album... but he spends the majority of that album singing, not rapping, and I think the reciprocal of that is also often the case, there are times singers spend a lot of their albums, which are not hip-hop albums, actually rapping, I think there's actually a lot of stuff that we don't normally consider rapping which actually IS rapping, we just don't think of it that way because it's not in a hip-hop song. I think back to Paul Simon in Graceland and the number of times he drops the melody and just quickly delivers lyrics with bouncy meter... that's rapping! He's not singing, he's not speaking, at several points on that record, Paul Simon is a Rapper. The definition is distinct from the cultural understanding of the term, and I think people just get hung up on the idea that Rap and Hip-hop are the same thing.

Omg I've been writing about EXACTLY this. Thank you I feel way less crazy. It's so hard to peg rappers to 'white' people (I think we're now in a time where her Indian identity is more appreciated, and is now obvious to Americans, I think really via the Kardashians, but that's a whole 'nother thing). But those who are appreciated, like Lean, or Mac, are either super talented or at least have incrediiiible flow. And she's got fuckin flow! And who don't dawn hip hop culture directly, but access it through things directly in their life (for Charli, the underground scene). I'm obsessed with Next level, and it's also not confirmed if the vocal was her or the gal on big brat/AG, so this writing style is really seeping pop in style.

it's interesting, she's mentioned that she loves Lou Reed songs. his style of singing (especially later in life) was almost like reading poetry with a slight melody implied. very cool, slightly detached, poetry... kinda like rapping in a more conversational way: not as showy or ostentatious. i'm so into the idea of her pursuing that style and I think we'll see alot more of it in the future :)
