Before Kramer (Seinfeld), before Burt Campbell (Richard Mulligan on ‘Soap’), there was Charlie Callas. He did three things well: Callas had an unbelievable number of sounds that he made with his voice, facial expressions to match, and he was an unparalleled storyteller. No one did it better.

One of his joke writers was my neighbor and she told me a story of a wild bird his children found and kept as a pet. It loved to eat spagetti! At the age of 8, I wrote a story about the bird, illustrated the cover and my neighbor mailed it to him for kicks. Do you know one night my mother woke me up and said, "Charlie Callas is on the phone!" He thanked me for the story and sent me a signed photo in the mail. Class act and one of THE funniest men in showbiz!
