Charlie graduated from the Food Science and Technology department in 1958 and later received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Originally from Australia, Charlie made the most of his time at OSU (then the Oregon State College) as an active member of both collegiate sports, clubs and politics and has remained a proud member of Beaver Nation ever since.
After obtaining his Ph.D., Charlie returned to Australia where he joined the faculty at the University of Sydney before moving back to the U.S. to work first at the University of Missouri and then with the Louis Rich Co and its subsidiary, Oscar Mayer, where he climbed the ladder of success over 24 years as a senior executive in R&D, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
After retiring in 1995, he and his wife Jean founded a food safety and quality consulting and audit firm, Cook & Thurber, which was instrumental in developing process-based food safety audits. After selling the firm in 2001, it still remains active in the global market serving the multibillion-dollar food service industry.
His career has included advisory roles for both the USDA and FDA, and he has served numerous times as an expert witness in litigation. Charlie’s outstanding career achievements continue to make a meaningful impact on countless lives as he is now actively working with FST faculty to develop a curriculum to support practical food safety and quality management training for both OSU undergraduates and people working in the food industry.
