I don't think that Charlie Kaufman giving his opinions on the film or sharing his intentions behind making it the way he did would prevent the viewers to develop their own opinions on the movie. It is only an opinion. The art stands alone. Charlie might not be conscious of all that he is saying with his own film. Probably some might be able to see further than him into it. It's only his perspective. I understand he might not want to become a preacher of his own work and undermine it converting it into a thesis. But it might be a thesis either way for most people, because it is the most digestible form to ingest art: as a dogmatic teaching. He would only be a preacher for the people who want to see him as such, he might already be a preacher for some, maybe some directors might stop explaining their ideas on their movies because Charlie doesn't do that either... I don't know... I just don't get it. This is not to say anything about Charlie Kaufman, it’s more his ideas on “preaching” that I’m battling against lol

Well one of the problems is though, that so many people will want to see him as the preacher. In my experience people all too often approach art as if there is a correct interpretation, that it is their job as a viewer to get, whereas actually I think usually the creative process is a very explorative process for the creator as well, and they're not always sure why they make things the way they make them. I know that if I didn't have that as an artist I wouldn't want to make anything. I also think there's something deeply important to people about mystery. To see something as meaningful and not know what that meaning is, is a lot of what makes life - particularly art - exciting for people. I know for me it's happened with some Lynch films, the point at which I 'got it' it suddenly lost all of its charm for me, and I felt tied to the narrative logic of the film. I mean I think you're right, there would still be more to it, but I just think people are so preoccupied with 'getting it'. They don't want to be the stupid person that didn't 'get it', whereas that's not where the really important part happens. Dunno, feel like I'm just repeating the things Kaufman says less eloquently now.

@@charliepotter100 That’s my point, as well, only with a different resolution. If that is the nature of most people (to see things dogmatically) why bother prohibiting oneself to talk about ones art? Most of his “followers” already see him as a preacher there’s no turning back, there’s no “teaching” or “sermon” he can give to change people’s dogmatic nature. His opinion wouldn’t also turn people that didn’t sanctified him into dogmatic followers... It actually seems like he wants to preach his opinion on not giving his opinion lol. Anyways this is not to say anything about Charlie Kaufman really, it’s more his ideas on “preaching” that bother me lol

@@adriansuchomusic Whether one wants to accept it or not, if an artists explains something about their work, everyone will see that as the correct explanation of it. And it can often damage your view on the work, because you no longer have a personal connection to it. You just had the artist come out and explain it to you. That's why artists encourage viewers to analyze their works and discuss it amongst themselves, but without the artist's input. A work is the talking, so there's really no reason for an artist to say anything beyond what is in the work. This is why a lot of the bests filmmakers, such as Kubrick, Lynch, Malick, also refuse to say anything about their works.

i think it’s important to consider that charlie might have motivations that he isn’t saying out loud. it’s pretty apparent that he struggles with anxiety, i’m guessing there’s a part of him that’s worried that if he explains his movies, it’ll sound stupid, or it won’t be as insightful as people expected. I definitely don’t believe that, but i’m guessing Charlie has no idea how smart he is

everyone acting like they've never heard of Team America 10:25 - like no one during the months of production mentioned it?

Team America isn't stop motion. Her question specifically referred to stop motion animation, but Team America was shot live with marionettes.

Not his best movie, but it was alright. My ranking of his movies, mostly based on my enjoyment of watching them: 1. Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind 2. Being John Malkovich 3. Human Nature (Although kind of silly, I enjoyed it and the underlying themes of exploration were interesting) 4. Adaptation 5. I'm Thinking of ending Things 6. Anomalisa 7. Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind 8.. Synecdoche, New York (Although ambitious and different I found the movie terribly boring)

Kauffman’s first films (Before SNY), with the exception of Human Nature, are a part of the mainstream Hollywood canon of films; largely appreciated due to the former, not because they are works by Kaufman or Jonze/Gondry. You are not offering anything that resembles a substantial or noteworthy non obvious opinion (even critical).
