We were able to get amazing unobstructed views of the Smoky Mountains during our Labor Day weekend visit to the famed National Park in eastern Tennessee. We took the Appalachian Trail from Newfound Gap to Charlies Bunion, an exposed rock protrusion that resembled the swollen foot affliction of Charlie Conner, a mountain guide investigating the area back in 1929.

The trek relatively follows the Tennessee North Carolina state line and is a favorite among day hikers and rock climbers. If traveling along the longest hiking-only trail in the world doesn’t get your blood pumping, surely the abundant wildlife, spectacular overlooks, and small dose of rock climbing will do the trick.
Massive logging of this area in the early 1900s left remains that were prone to fire. In 1925 one such fire consumed the dry brush and left lifeless soil. Without vegetation, an extreme downpour of rain washed away the soil and created bare rock outcroppings. Today, this feature has resulted in unobstructed views that makes the Bunion unique and one of the best hiking destinations in the park
