In May of 2024, Canadian Pacific 2816 “The Empress” traversed the route of the Milwaukee Road Southwest Limited through Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Dubbed the “Final Spike Steam Tour” by CPKC, this historic steam event was organized to celebrate one year of the combined CP-KCS-KCSM system. On May 9th, train traveled from Bensenville, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa on the CPKC Chicago and Davenport subdivisions, the first time a steam locomotive has traveled on the line west of Chicago since 1957. On May 10th, the train was on display in downtown Davenport as an official steam tour event. On May 11th, the train left Davenport for Kansas City and traveled on the Ottumwa and KC-Ottumwa (formerly the CP Laredo sub) subdivisions, the first steam locomotive to travel this line since Milwaukee Road 261 in 2005. This is 2816’s first time ever visiting Iowa and Missouri and its first mainline excursion of any kind in over ten years. As part of the tour, 2816 will travel round trip from Calgary to Mexico City and return, a feat that no other steam locomotive has ever achieved. I was privileged to capture this historic steam event for three straight days on lines that I have watched trains on all my life. This was truly an unforgettable experience, and I was glad to share it with my many friends who were also out chasing The Empress. I can’t wait to shoot the return trip later this month. Thanks for watching!
