this is not... however their are public lands in eastern Utah in the Unita Basin where it is legal to collect invertebrate fossils... we have an episode on one of those sites back in our feed... check out that episode to learn more

How do you preserve it, keep it from falling apart?

Exact, once you find one what should you do to preserve it as it erodes so quick?

a lot of it is luck... if the rock is going to want to split apart their is not much you can do, except glue it back. but you can do a few things. once the fossil is found, wrap it in some newspaper to protect it. then when you get it home dip the rock (fossil and all) in a 50/50 solution of Elmers glue and water (it's the same process that is used in preserving the fossil fish from this formation) the rock will absorb the moisture and the glue will hold it in place and protect it...... i know it sounds too simple.... but sometimes the simplest solution is the simplest answer.

I'd love to go hunting places like this. So far my wife and I have only been able to hunt for sharks teeth around Calvert County MD.

This is fascinating. I live in the painted desert in Arizona. I find some fossils but nothing like what I would expect (besides tons of petrified wood.) I wonder if I just need to split more rocks.

Thanks Awesome!! Thanks for sharing! ... you can split more rock, or just keep looking. you could also go look to see what fossils are known from your area... that will show you what can be found. Good Luck and hope you find something Awesome!
