It is incredible to witness these dainty flowers in all shapes and colour carpet the harsh landscapes around. The best time to view these wild flowers are between the middle of august to middle of September so make sure you add this to your 2024 travel bucketlist!
Let’s take you back to the start as we drive down the scenic Pakhuys pass making our way towards the Biedouw Valley. After a scenic drive through the colourful flowers we made it to our campsite. We stayed at Enjo Nature Farm and take you for a tour of the property after cleaning up our tiny home on wheels. We took a stroll along the farm roads , found a reservoir and ended off the day with a cool off in the river flowing past camp.
The next day we wake up with the sounds of weaver birds chirping, brew some fresh coffee before hitting the road. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side as it was extremely windy and cloudy so the flowers didn’t open up but we decided to keep driving and see what came. After a while driving the Karoo Highlands route we found ourselves heading towards a mountain which took us from the Western Cape into the Northern Cape. We made it to camp for the night as a storm was pulling in so we got to work for the rest of the evening.
In the morning we woke to sunshine and dew all around camp. Star Wors campsite only has 3 private sites and it is themed around Star Wars. We stayed in camp Yoda which has a private boma area with a braai, running water to do dishes and 12V electrical plug points. As well as a private shower built into the rocky boulders. Communal toilets and braais are scattered around the property. One can also use the wood fired hot tub for a small extra fee.
We hit the road and found ourselves pulling over very quickly as the flowers were in full bloom with the sun shining. The fields were covered in yellow and we couldn’t wait to see what the day had in store. We grabbed some roadside snacks from locals who were baking Roosterbroods on the open fire. Fresh warm bread with butter, cheese & jam - DELISH.
Arriving at the Gannabos Quiver Tree forest we were amazed to see all the overlanders also in search of wild flowers at this time of year. We paid R50 per person entrance free then walked through these large scattered succulents. This is the largest quiver tree forest in the Southern Hemisphere. There are no designated paths you can wander freely as you please.
The Nieuwoudtville Waterfall was magnificent to witness! We weren’t expecting much but we’re instantly amazed at the large drop off with dainty purple flowers around, it was so worth the stop!
Our last stop for the day was at the Nieuwoudtville Wild Flower Reserve. The variety of wildflowers in the area were mesmerising! We had fun driving and wandering through the flower fields and would definitely recommend a road trip in search of this spectacular nature show. Rusks joined us for a little walk through the yellow daisies then it was time to make our way back towards the Western Cape.
We hope you enjoyed this weeks video, see you in the next one!
