Chatteris is located in the fenlands of Cambridgeshire - a historic town that was once by the sea, although the sea has now retreated more than 100km from here. Chatteris is reputed to have been the last refuge of Boudica as she fled from the Romans. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 although settlements have been here since at least the Neolithic period. As with many medieval villages, fires took their toll and what one sees today is largely from the nineteenth century with the tower of the parish church the only medieval building remaining.
Following the draining of the Fens, beginning in the 17th century and completed in the 19th century, the town's economy has been based on agriculture and related industry. Due to its proximity to Cambridge, Huntingdon and Peterborough, the town has emerged as a commuter town. The town had a population of 10,453 at the time of the United Kingdom Census 2011.
