James Purefoy has had a long and magnificent career but i don't think he's ever been more charismatic than he was in A Knight's Tale. Once you pointed that out, my first thought was, "...of course he can even steal scenes he has no lines are close-ups in." Well, partly steal. Paul Bettany isn't exactly pissing about in this film either.

Chaucer is NOT a peasant, he is a Freeman, a Yeoman, and acting as a "Fool" or Jester. Certain License was granted to "Fools" for the Noble desire entertainment, and spectacles such as Jousts, Tournaments, are put on to Entertain Noble and Commoner alike. A Knight's Tale is in many ways more "gritty" and "realistic" than many other movies set in the era of Chivalry. It is also its "Own World" of "Jousting" as "Football" and has an Internal Consistency More important is is Dang Good Fun to Enjoy!.
