A resilient washer added in the thrust stack on each axis also helps as it at least discourages the vise from floating off position due to backlash. Obviously there's a trade off involving the stiffness of the washer and amount of preload force (more stiff &or more preload = less float for any given reaction force at the drill tip; but also means stiffer movement and notre thread wear. Likewise with tighter dovetail gibs. But for a drill vise tighter is better as it isn't moving in use so you can accept it being a bit tighter.

A worn of advice on your upgrade, there is a finite amount of how much force that can be applied to the front jaw of that cheap vice, it easily snaps off from too much force as I've learned from experience.

These are good videos, the audio was a little quiet, but that is better than too loud. :) Does your drill press table rotate? This is an interesting fix. My table rotates, so I was lucky in that I could just rotate my table and cross slide vice (installed the normal way) to the side to go more of a long piece in the vice. Your method is a bit more pre-work, but avoids that issue, so is cool. :) Thanks for sharing this. Do you have one of those socket attachments to go in a drill? That could be another way to get that to open and close quickly.

FYI don't use WD40, use teflon dry lubricant, it comes in a spray bottle or just a regular bottle and doesn't attract metal shavings

But your modifications are straight forward and a definite upgrade to how it is from the box I will be sure to duplicate your work in order to make this functional. Much appreciated as I would have been mega pissed when I opened the box 👍👍👍👍👍

WD-40 is not a lubricant it's strictly for dissolving rust & water

actually DISPLACING water..as in washes it out. I had an opportunity where a vw was shorting out it's cap and wires from the distributor in heavy rain... I squirted some WD-40 over the wires and INSIDE the distributor, and the car fired up with no more short circuits and arcing. THAT's WHAT WD-40 is for. WATER DISPLACEMENT from metal and other surfaces..ALSO it is a mild solvent for some glues and residue

Great vid! Are you still glad you got the 6” vs the 5” cross vise? I recently purchased the 5” as it was significantly lighter and I was concerned that the rack on the table might suffer under the additional weight of the 6 when raising it up. On the size drill press you have, do you consider the 6” an advantage? Thanks!

I just got this same set up for Christmas. Heavy duty is my way of doing things. And for the cost this is a great set up. But if you need a lighter rack and need to move it a lot, perhaps the lighter vice will be more effective for you. I would go big.

I thought it was only me that ended up working on my knees rather than clearing a bench. My drill press is big enough to hold the vice as originally delivered without changing the vice clamping arrangement. Though the best modification I have found is to fit two thrust bearings on each of the crank handle threaded rods, this makes for smoother turning and adjustment also helps you to have the gib strip settings tighter so less slop when doing some light milling.

Thank you for the video, but my thoughts on this were that at some points, the bottom adjuster could still be in the way of a closed or open end wrench being turned in one continuous fluid motion and also that he seemed to use his fingers to open and close it more than one of the wrenches it was designed for. It just seems to me that it's just about the same amount of work as the original screw handle. I'm not saying that the cross-slide didn't need improving, but I just don't think this custom change was precisely the answer either. It was a start, but the design was still somewhat flawed and not thought out as much as it should have been for the amount of time and effort put into it in this video.

@@madmodder123 I think you misunderstand me. I was not and am not attacking you or trying to belabor a point. I'm just saying that there seems to be as much work in creating as there is in just simply using. As for creating better things and ways, I'm all for it and for people like you who actually DO the do's, so again, I'm not knocking anything with or for you. As to your question, this should make you smile, my answer is no, at the moment I do not have a better suggestion and won't in the future because I don't intend on taking that path at this moment. But I do believe my original comment was not and should not have been taken as an attack or otherwise because I fully and KINDLY explained my position while still giving you credit none-the-less. Should I ever have the need to eventually go down that path then I would give it thought. But for now, ur' the King Boss.
