Stock up on food now, don’t wait until you clean out that cupboard or whatever you’ve been waiting for. Tip: I bought three ten gallon bins (not very big) at the Dollar General. I was able to put enough store bought food in those three stacked bins to feed two adults for six weeks! Canned tuna, salmon, veggies, fruit, hearty soups, sugar, dry milk, canned milk, oats, sugar, peanut butter, pasta, sauce, cocoa mix, mayo, rice, beans, boxed potatoes, and more!

My husband gets laid off every winter, so we have to stock up for the leaner income months of unemployment. One thing we do every spring and summer is to decide what home or auto repairs or project needs done that year. Then we start stocking up on parts, supplies, tools and/or gift cards to do those projects during his down time. He works 50-70 hour weeks 3/4 of the year and after a short winter vacation he's going nutso if he has nothing to keep him active. This winter we're turning our old bedroom into a full size pantry/ storage area and possibly siding our home in early spring if weather works with us.

When I was newly married and we had very little money... I used to add raw oats to mince and tomato based sauce to bulk out the mince over pasta. If we had an unexpected guest, it was ground beef, oats and tomato sauce etc. No one ever knew it was in there. It would absorb the same flavors and be invisible. I would also add it cooked to ground beef patties for hamburgers. Try it and see for yourself.

Just so you and Heather know, (The Kneady Homesteader) I owe both of y'all my eternal gratitude. I started my stock the pantry/canning journey with you two this year, And I just endured the Texas Snowpocolypse. My family was a bit chilly, but just fine. We had nice hot food from the pantry (cooked on a butane stove) and plenty of water (put back monthly) and we didn't have to go out and participate in the craziness. We were safe, fed, and looked like modern sherpas until the power finally came back on. Thank you so much for videos. I have learned so much, and my family is extremely grateful for the knowlege you share. Much love to you and Heather.

For those just barely making ends meet, don't be ashamed to visit your local pantry for at least a while. Get what you can there for help. Afterward take a bit of your money you would normally have spent at the store, and buy long term help like peanut butter, honey, oatmeal, dried fruits, canned meat (which will get out of this world expensive later) and the beans and bread making stuff Leisa said. Those of us that give assistance to food pantries don't mind helping you attain a self sufficient goal if you don't have the money. We just don't always know what you need like you do. And for those that have ways to free up a bit of extra cash that need some direction: it is very hard to give up that daily trip for a coffee or a 6 pack for the weekend, or buying a candy bar every day at work. We all love to pamper ourselves. But when starvation hits it will be more difficult to beat yourself up about not wanting to buy an extra can of tuna instead of the candy bar. Once you realize the good feeling of preparedness vs not looking for how you can fix it, it will build you up inside as you grow in this. I've been there in my life many years ago too. Now I realize every meal out costs about what 3 or 4 home cooked meals cost. I learned I had to change my ways or be short of money in emergencies for the rest of my life!

I actually have done this. I started this summer. I included canned meats like chicken, tuna, spam, butter, bullion cubes, and powdered drink mixes. Water can get monotonous. I pick up something every time I go shopping. I've even got the dry soup mixes by Bear Creek. They are inexpensive, you just add water, it makes a half gallon, and has flavors like minestrone, navy bean, lentil, chicken noodle, cheddar potato, cheddar broccoli, and others. The spices are already in them and the are quick to make. Already has the veggies and everything. I got bulk pancake mix for about $6 at Sam's club with 2 big bottles of syrup for less. I also have water, 3 gallon jugs and bottles. As I use it I replace it and add a little more.

And one way to make rice that always turns out; taught to me by a friend from Korea. Use a heavy 2-3 qt pan. Put how much rice you want in; 1-2 cups; expect it to double. Shake it even, cover with cold water- measure with your thumb! Put the tip of thumb gently on top of rice with water coming to your first knuckle. Put a lid on & turn on burner to a slow simmer. Cook for about 15 minutes; all of water is absorbed! Works every time in every climate! I dont add salt or seasoning till its cooked. Much cheaper than instant rice!

Hi, new sub here. I just wanted to add my thoughts. There is whole demographic down here in Texas that consumes quite a bit of beans, rice and tortillas. I encourage everyone to get to know dried chilies. They are cheap and add so much flavor to a meal. There are so many kinds/flavors and not all are hot. Yesterday I put a chuck roast in the slow cooker with some chilies, water, jalapeno jelly and a tea strainer of dried herbs. Dinner was fajitas made with strips of beef, bell peppers yellow squash, onion and green beans from the garden, served in a tortilla, a side of spanish rice and refried beans. Today I'm canning the broth from roast. Plenty of leftovers for dinner tonight. Hope this helps to ward off food fatigue.

Ramen was my favorite hiking meal - just add some jerky, dehydrated veggies, small blob of peanut butter, rex pepper flakes or Tabasco, and some extra bouillon and it was my favorite meal when I was really tired and it was too hot for some heavy hiking meal. Pop tart for desert and I was a happy backpacker! And yea, my gut is giving me all kinds of warnings. Watching the news is like seeing some of the crazy storylines from books coming to life.

Watch the ads as we approach the holidays. Lots of 10 for $10 sales on canned veggies. We also restock the freezer with hams and turkeys right before Thanksgiving. You can get turkey as low as $0.19/lb if you watch the ads and shop early. Then we eat them year round.

I have been working very hard on my pantry since March. I was one of those people that got caught with their knickers down around my ankles - never again. I only buy those things I know I will eat, not what all the preppers say to buy. I am not a big rice eater but I have been perfecting the chicken and rice casserole which is made from scratch (not cream of mushroom soup stuff) - I have to say yum and it lasts for several meals. I have store bought items and items I have put up myself. I break everything down for my portion size (it is just me). I have stuff in the freezer and when meat goes on sale I buy it and vacuum seal it and put it away. I am at the point now where I am only restocking what I eat and use which is a great place to be. My mom and dad were children of the depression and I remember us kids teasing her that her pantry was like a grocery store, now I understand why she did it. I hope she would be proud of me if she could see what I have accomplished.

I'm sure she would be proud. And upset at what the world has come to. My grandparents were of that generation and kept huge gardens and stored large pantries. Then for some reason my mother did not. I wonder why all of that knowledge just dropped off.

@@SirenaSpades same for me. Grandparents gardened, canned, pressure cooked, pressure canned and my mom was lazy. Boxed or frozen meal prep was the foundation of her cooking. Rarely made anything from scratch. I learned baking from my bestfriends mom. Still don't know how to can or pressure can. Have been buying supplies in hopes to teach myself. But I'm a hands on learner. So time will tell.

Everthing you said in this video was spot on! You had to mention pickle powder, I can't - my husband may just "pickle" one day😜 Wish you well❤️

I love beans, too. Dried, cooked, baked, green, northern, kidney, etc. So got lots of those. But, since I cook for one, I'm also buying the Campbell's pork and beans (about 11-ounces). Just the perfect size for one. Add a hot dog, ketchup, mustard, onion, green pepper, a dash of Worcestershire, and yum, it's a meal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Leisa. Always appreciated. (PS...peanut butter and banana sandwiches...yes. If you're really adventurous, add a shmear of mayo. ) ...(:

Great list of good food! Bean salad Is a family favorite of ours and so easy to make: 2 cans black beans, drained & rinsed; 1 can corn, drained; 1 can chick peas, drained & rinsed. Mix with a bit of olive oil, juice of a lemon or lime, or any kind of vinegar. Season with salt, pepper, & cumin. Add chopped onion or chives, parsley or cilantro. Mint is good too. Sometimes I cook a little barley and add that. We eat this a lot and sometimes i snack on it. Healthy whole food and doesn't need to be cooked unless you are adding barley. Grandkids love it. Yum!

Judy Howell , there are several ways. I usually open the bag, put in an oxygen absorber and reseal the bag (can be done in Mylar) and then place them in a good grade storage bucket. Cheetos go in half gallon jars with an oxygen absorber and then vacuum sealed. There are chips sold in canisters which can also be placed unopened in storage buckets.

@debrawhited3035

Please note that cheese powder (butter, sour cream, anything dairy) does not have a very long shelf life. I bought some, and the ex-date was only 6 months later. Hoosier Hill and others seem to be marketed mostly for flavoring popcorn, not long-term food storage and use when fresh dairy is not available. I second your advice about dried fruit. It stores a very long time, and can be used in lots of ways. I like it cooked into oatmeal - another good item for food storage. Even plain, it would be a sweet treat if food wasn't plentiful.

Great Idea.. Solve your own problem regarding frozen fruits and the expense. Buy fresh fruit when their in season and on sale and freeze them yourself. Line a baking sheet and lay your fresh cut fruit out in a single layer, then when frozen transfer to zip bags or food saver bags. Problem solved. Yay!!
