Hey creator here! Thanks for watching and thanks Thrill for the review :3 Wanna clarify some things: 1) It's not released yet and setup for the production version will be improved and should be much easier. Setting up proportions will always be *some* work, but stuff like wifi and saving settings and ugly GUI will be improved, work is done right now. Software is what I'm working on actively right now! 2) Not sure what happened with Thrill's right leg, pretty sure it could've been fixed :D Anyway, setup will be better and things like this should go away. 3) You don't need to connect your PC to wifi. It can be on the same network with the router. Or you can use wifi dongle just for SlimeVR trackers if your router by some reason doesn't support bands that slime works on.

Independent open source software that solves a problem is just the kind of threat that Facebook hates, but evidently they don't see it as such. Theoretically maybe they have their own full body tracking system in the works using the onboard cameras in the same way they have hand tracking. One thing is for sure, demand pushes forward innovation.
@ThrillSeekerVR

@smittyvanjagermanjenson182

They'd probably only see it as a threat if it encroached on their own full body solution. I know everyone isn't a fan of Facebook reality labs, but they should be giving us an FBT option similar to what slime offers. Like they can make a wristband that senses finger movements, but not FBT? smh..
@nordic-chan
3 жыл бұрын
With the way that Insight is set up I see no way for Facebook to add FBT to the Quest. At least not without hardware changes (it would need a fully downfiring camera). That said I don't really think Facebook cares about adding FBT. Especially since most vr games are just not including legs period now. It flies in the face of their "price point is everything" strategy.

It's not a threat, whatsoever. It's an amateur project that's not gonna work out. To quote my former comment: The creator is some russian hobbyist person that has no idea of manufacturing. This is not a manufacturing prototype, but a functional prototype. They won't be able to produce it for the price they promise, and it's not all just "oh it's just software problems!". At first it was 100$, then 150$, now it's 180-250$ "max". It'll just keep going up as they realize manufacturing isn't just part cost, but personnel, space, machinery, tooling, publicity and so on cost as well. If you followed the development, the dev is clueless and basically doing this like a hobby project, learning as they go. At first it was "yeah you just need 5 trackers, it works perfectly! I'm gonna mass produce soon!", then suddenly "I've run into problems!", then at some point the external IMUs came into play because well, 5 trackers WASN'T enough. Even still, I doubt you can go much farther than it already is with this army of (expensive!) IMUs. Just for reference, even if you buy 1000 of the bare chip (which the dev here is not doing, they're buying modules), one costs like 7 bucks. Assuming they use the same one (which is very probable), that's.. 8*7=56 bucks JUST for the IMUs. Add 5 ESPs to that for ~3 bucks a piece, and you're already at like 80+ bucks, and that's just for 2 parts. Not including the housing, not including the PCB itself, not including the battery, not including assembly, not including straps and so on. As an electrical engineer, looking at the hardware side of things is also just painful. It's just some modules linked together. That's not how you make this shit.

Lmao, Tundra's only shipping to Early Backers by the end of August, and to everybody in the Kickstarter by end of October. At best you'll be able to buy retail right afterwards, but there's no guarantees it'll release to retail immediately or that you'll then be at the front of the line. So it's either Vive Trackers or waiting. I'm hoping that SlimeVR will release first and be enough, but chances are that I'll end up being forced to buy the Tundra trackers, too.

The fact that SlimeVR uses ESPs and is completely open source is amazing. ESP microcontrollers are very common among makers/hackers so it's possible for a lot of people to improve the soft- and hardware. I'm sure with the right people and a little bit of time it could surpass currently available, much more expensive closed source products. A potential problem might be inaccuracy over time. IMUs aren't perfect and after a lot of use they might need recalibration. I don't have much experience with how noticable this would be, It would be nice to have some tests regarding that. Another problem could arise from IMUs not staying in place correctly, which can be reduced with more secure straps and is of course dependent on how you use them.

This looks like it has huge potential. Two major things stood out to me here: - No bay stations needed. This is huge for me, I can't put them up where I am and although wireless tracking is already a thing, you are still limited by the area your stations cover (or whatever method you're using). Unless someone set up some kind of insane network of baystations all over the house I guess lol, but then imagine the work and cost involved compared to this. Without this requirement it means your playspace can effectively be wherever you want without needing to put stations up, as long as you have a stable connection. Like you could walk through to another room, up/down stairs (using passthrough or something) and it still track you. On top of that, if your VR environment was able to identify or match the dimensions of those rooms and connecting corridors (like what the quest is working on, marking irl objects out in vr etc) in theory, you could freely move about them without ever leaving VR or using passthrough. I know a lot of this is already/nearly possible, but to be able to do this all both wirelessly AND with full body tracking the whole time feels like a really big deal! - Covering them doesn't effect performance. Also huge - more freedom with your movement, you can cover them, cross your arms/legs or even wear them under a jacket or something if you really wanted to. This is just one less thing you need to stay aware of whilst in vr and much more convenient. As long as it works, that's just a straight up improvement over other tracking methods and won't cause your tracking to freak out if you accidentally move in front of something haha. It's important to remember here that it's a work in progress so of course right now its not *perfect* but what's here seems pretty darn good already. I'm sure with a bit of refinement and work on the janky setup process these could be amazing.

This is honestly dope. I can't imagine shelling out a lot of money for the Vive even tho it's really great so seeing this as an option is always 100/10. I can't wait to see it out!

So, the fact that they can't be inhibited by fabric tells me that building them into a jumpsuit and making a full immersion suit would be possible once the software is completed. Very cool.

The fact that it's Open Source is EXCELLENT news. Things just get better the more that dedicated fans get their hands on it.

I was so psyched until I saw how much it relies on decent wifi, when we're out here paying top dollar for service that would be barely acceptable anywhere else. :') ah well. Still dang cool that this even exists! Kudos to the team.

Would you consider doing an updated review on the state of SlimeVR right now? It has gone through a LOT of updates and it would be cool to hear your updated opinions of it!

Sadly the only update there would be is that they've failed and are close to closing. At least thats what I think. theyve almost trippled their price and still havent even made a public release for consumers 3 years later. Not even all the backers got their product. My friend says he was promised a set 8 months ago

This is just a theory, but if you dont care about cost, but do want precise tracking that works without line of sight, it should be possible to make trackers that use RF for tracking instead of visible on near infrared light. Similar techonology is used all the time everywhere, its called GPS, and there are industrial tracking systems that use RF where GPS may not be accurate enough and where los cant be maintained all the time from trackers to base stations.

This has so much potential, the fact that it doesn't need to be tracked by lighthouses alone is already a deal breaker for me since my playspace isn't that great.

All I want out of these is inside-out Fullbody tracking. No more having to worry about occlusion!
@bountyjedi

There's an occlusion problem (your own body) with inside-out full-body tracking, if you're talking about using cameras for it at least. Maybe you could put a camera in each tracker though? Sounds like it'd be expensive...

I would have liked to of heard about using something like the DecaMove along side SlimeVR, or use of the SlimeVR hip tracker in the same way the DecaMove is meant to be used. Great video, thanks for all the information every week! :)

Not having to worry about occlusion sounds amazing. If this can somehow get close to the same tracking quality of vive tracking, and gets a far easier setup, I will definitely switch over. I want to get more points of tracking too, so the extra leg tracking is a nice touch. If it supported some arm trackers on the elbows to smooth out arm motion it would be great!

this is exactly what I need. I use VD, in my room its fine, because my PC is their, but I can't go full body because I also go downstairs, which is fine for VD, but as basestations are required its not possible also with the tinkering, as with many things like this people will collectively build up perfect profiles etc

Added bit of advice: I'd say you should look up how to assign static leases on whatever router you're using. That way they get the same IPs every time they connect.
