Glad you found a new controller to give you the performance you desired. Also, I have to comment on the ironic timing of this short; I was just looking up some of your old videos after having all but forgotten about this channel and layout for months, and then lo and behold, a brand new video drops out of the blue.

I’m running ‘cheap’ PWM controllers on my N gauge layout I opted for units that have a power % display and I run them off a laptop power supply which is rated to a rather high 18v at 2.8 amp however I find the level of control especially at low speed extremely good plus I’ve come to learn how much power each loco uses to initially move off and then maintain a realistic speed. There is a lot to be said about the quality of control with a proper controller tho as it’s probable I got lucky with my setup

I think the problem is that the actual PWM frequency coming from the controller is wrong so you have to turn the dial up fairly high

That might make sense! I am not good with electronics.
