I’ve owned this optic for about a year and this review was spot on. I use it for the curious raccoon who has a taste for my laying hens and coyotes out to 150 yards. There’s better out there but not for this price.

Exactly. It's the perfect affordable low light devices for homesteaders, and to an extent prepared citizens. A PVS-14 is more versatile, but a full night vision setup is also a lot more expensive and good luck spotting raccoons with night vision.

@@SpecOpsGear went that route and while Nightvision has its place it’s much harder for a critter (2 or 4 legs) to hide from thermal. My furthest coyote kill with the AGM has been 225 yards with magnification bumped to 3x. All I need for my area.

Matt, Thank you for providing us with the detailed analysis of entry level clip on thermal imaging optics period I am doing my initial research to try and find the best load price optic lower price optic that I can afford. Helps to break down information that helps me to understand the pros and cons of the different features and the minimum requirements for usage. Your video has been very helpful and I thank you again. This was my choice for my "tactical" thermal. The wide fov and low magnification is exactly what I wanted. I want to see all the things good enough and not one thing really well. The quality qd mount makes it very convenient.

It's a great scope, you're gonna love it. All thermal optics have complicated menus, so make sure you spend some time to practice the buttons because you'll have to do it by feel. I like to use warm soda cans as targets. Set them up at the ranges you're seeing 'yotes and practice your shots. Consider getting rechargeable cr123 batteries, because batteries get expensive. What region are you in? I'm in PNW and i could be up for coyote hunting.

It's a lot of scope for the money! And the fact that it highlights warmblooded objects even out at a few hundeed yards is super useful. Mount on a rifle or just use as a handheld.

It would be invaluable on a farm. You don’t know what your not seeing until you look through a thermal device. I used Nightvision for a couple of years and it did work great. Problem was a coyote or raccoon could hide in the weeds and I woudnt see them. Much harder to hide from thermal

I have two questions that I been having trouble finding conclusions regarding what should be my first purchase of a thermal. What would be the pros and cons of the 640 vs 384 versions of the rattler in terms of detection distance and would I be better off with a clip on thermal so I can maintain a day rifle that I can add the ability to detect at night vs two separate rifles?
@SpecOpsGear
Ай бұрын
@@Dustyhillfarms detection range is really good for both 384/640... ID range is much better on the 640 core. I've been running dedicated thermal with ADM qd on both a day optic and a thermal on the same rifle, so far so good as far as maintaining zero. Clip on is best for all around, BUT, for longer range shots you lose resolution on a clip-on compared to a dedicated thermal (due to base magnification etc). Whats your average engagement range?
@Dustyhillfarms
Ай бұрын
@@SpecOpsGear it’s hard to say what my average engagement range is due to how varied my area is in field and tree lines. I would say it’s possible ranges from 150 yards max up to 1000 ish but my preparation fantasy has me focused on shooting 3-400 yards max range and 150-250 yards consistently and I would be happy with 200 yards at night for engagement but I don’t know how much of a ask that is for thermals. I’ve only just been sold on the concept. Would the 384 stingr from agm and agm’s own flip mount be a good recommendation?
@SpecOpsGear

@@Dustyhillfarms 200+ yards would be a stretch for a 384 core clip on. Also, stingir may not actually be an official rifle rated clip on capable of being zero'ed (clip-ons need zeroing). @@barryhebert5839 it'll work on 308 just fine, or slap it on an ar15. If you wanna nerd out on it, the ideal predator rifle is highly accurate, high velocity rounds so they can be flat shooting and hit small targets like coyotes at extended ranges without having to dope the shot much.

In the $2,000 range the rattler is great. At $4-6k iRay/infiray is king. For under $5,000- i'd shop around for a 640 core infiray rico mk1, must be 640 core. There's two 640 core mk1 scopes: a 2x and a 3x (the 4x is a 384 core). The 2x comes on sale for $3,999 and the 3x goes on sale for $4,999. If you call them, limitless can get you the 2x version even though it's not listed. limitlessamerica.com/thermal-scopes/ The ultimate in multirole flexibility is probably the iray rico micro rh25 640 core but those are 6,000.
