Titanium, despite popular opinion, does not make for a good knife metal, for all of titanium's great material properties, it does not maintain a sharp edge for long, something to keep in mind for a diving knife

I came across this dive knife test quite by accident through a search engine link. My curiosity about the performance of a titanium blade dive was heightened when the test was done using a borrowed knife, unchecked for sharpness. That really is a red flag for any pre-dive checklist. For all its good traits, titanium is problematical when it comes to sharpening and edge maintenance. You need a diamond abrasive to sharpen the blade because of its hardness. Dive knives are expendable tools - I've lost a couple - and stainless (Cressi is a really good one) really isn't a weight problem but is a far more acceptable loss than a $150 vanity blade.

Yeah, so I dive with my best friend and it was his titanium knife. The rule is 1 is none and 2 is one, so this was his spare knife. Surprised him how dull it was because it was never used. And yes, after every dive the gear is rinsed and dried. Still, I’ve never had a knife on me that dull. Take it from me, that has never happened again for him or me

That's the opposite of the problem. Titanium is stronger than steel in many ways, but it is softer, usually 30-40 odd HRC, compared to 50-60s for steel. (There are insanely hard Titanium Nitride coatings, but that's just the coating.) It doesn't hold an edge as long. It's much easier to sharpen, but goes dull quickly.

I've got a couple of cressi knives. They not only look cool but they're sturdy as hell. I'm not a diver though, I just like their shapes.

I dont care whos knife you buy and where you buy it. Knife sharpening is a skill EVERYONE should have. I can take the cheapest dive knife you can buy and make it shave hair. 100% guaranteed. A knife is a TOOL and a damn important one, whether you are in the woods, underwater or in space......learn to sharpen a knife. It should get just as much attention as your dive mask, regulators and BC Jacket. IT IS ESSENTIAL.

Cressi Borg and Cressi Orca are the only knives you ever need for anything. Have an orca, and it's the best scuba knife I have ever used. Borg is more aimed at scuba/free diving and the orca is a pure scuba knife

But also, life is too short to not sharpen your expensive knives

Steel is a much better knife material, the only issue with it is rust resistance. But if you buy a good quality stainless steel knife and take care of it, it'll be just fine.
