The choices are. a bit of cold weather in the winter time. or heat stroke and massive bugs in the summer time. Choices choices. Pick your punishment. Myself. I have a small place in the Caribbean for the winter months... and i have a small place near the city center in the north for the summer months. Costs me a whole $1000 a year to fly back and forth. whoop de do dah. When you start getting older. Priorities change. Being able to walk to the store or doctors or whatever means now you don't need a car. That's big time $$$ in your pocket right there. Downsizing your house to an easy to clean condo... no more lawns to mow...just go to the park... no more house repairs to do... oh and it's cheaper so you have $ to buy other stuff elsewhere and or invest it and live off the interest as an extra income source. I'm not old yet. But i learned from COVID that i don't need to work anymore so i quit. i am self sufficient because i found other ways to make $ because some dick named Don in the government caused me to basically lose my job for most of last year. and i already have my retirement stuff all in place so F it. I live just outside of Fort Wayne. I love it here, and I bought my house (yes fixer upper) for 66. I kid you not, and it has great bones. I'm from OR, and the housing prices here are astounding. FW residents are aghast at how much a decent house costs where I'm from. If you buy a fixer upper, just be aware there is a construction boom going on here so contractors who are available to fix up your house aren't necessarily who you want to hire, if you know what I mean. I have found that mental health counselors are actually not scarce here, which kind of lends itself to the idea that health care is good here. I've been here a few months, so we'll see.

I'm in NWA. I've lived here for 42 years and I reared my 4 children here... so I'm almost a native by now (though to the true natives you will always be a transplant). I love the scenery the people and the weather isn't bad. And NWA has become quite cosmopolitan with great arts (Crystal Bridges is a phenomenal gift to NWA per Jane Walton - daughter of Sam), theater, huge music venues and extensive biking and walking trails connecting all the cities in NWA. The population demographic just keeps getting younger as Gen x-ers discover the beauties of this area. Because of that the population has grown exponentially in the last decade. The negatives? Because the city planners have not been very alert or visionary re this explosive growth traffic jams are becoming more and more common and at certain seasons and times of day can take a long time to unravel. The mosquitoes are ubiquitous and the size of a small bird and the humidity is really high. But the worst thing to me is that Arkansas is one of the worst places in the country for allergies...and they're year round. I'm so tired of sneezing and blowing my nose 24/7. I will leave here as soon as I can afford it - hopefully within a couple of years. If you need a dry climate do your homework before deciding on NWA.

This should be a list of the most un exciting places to live. There are other things to consider as well that can’t be quantified by just stats. Yes, you want to look at those things but also the Fun factor, things to do, culture, vibes, convenience, day to day amenities, shopping, how receptive the locals are to outsiders moving in, social climate, politics, weather, culinary options, sporting events (teams), outdoor activities like camping, boating, hiking close by. I think people should look at the whole picture before making a final choice. The best part is if you don’t like it, you can move somewhere else. I just hope i can stay healthy long enough to enjoy my retirement before my job kills me from stress.

I do okay with low income subsidized housing, medicare, food stamps, and some utility assistance in my small town. But I really want to see some new places. Interesting that Cleveland made #1 on your list. Cleveland has been on my radar for the past several months. I'm planning on investing in rental real estate, and have discovered Cleveland was #1 on my criteria for where to buy. A - some of the cheapest housing in the US. B - lots of duplex/triplex/fourplex units. C - a high ratio of population that rent versus own homes. D - a city that previously bottomed out, but is now rebounding back upwards (yet still has an unsavory reputation based on its history), meaning that housing is still cheap and will likely remain so for the next decade, but by the time I'm looking to sell and get out of that business, prices will be rocketing upwards. E - price of renting versus cost to own, producing the highest possible ROI of cash down payment.

Winston-Salem and Greensboro? Lovely. Come and see us in Kernersville, right between them, and only ten minutes from each. When you're in Winston, be sure to see Old Salem.

Georgia,Tennesee,Texas ,Arizona New Mexico,Colorado,Utah re cheap and nice to retire in. Florida is becoming expensive to retire in, but Tallahasee is still affordable and many towns in Florida north of Ocala .

If you noticed, a large number of cities on this list are in Texas. Even in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area, the suburbs can be very cheap living, cheaper than all the stats you listed for the "best" cities. (I live in one.)

I lived in Greensboro for four years while attending UNC Greensboro. I loved the city of Greensboro. It has everything you need for a city but it's not overcrowded by no means. If you're a basketball fan the ACC tournament and some NCAA tournament games are held there. Most college basketball fans love Greensboro minus Jim Boeheim. Hit the like button if you get the reference.
