One of my best purchases has been a 2020 iPad Pro from the Apple Refurbished page. $600 for the same new design, 120hz, and is still more powerful than anything I need it for. You can get the current gen iPad Pro 11 M1 at Walmart refurbished for $600 too. It's not always in stock is the only issue, however, it will often be in stock momentarily throughout the day. Just check periodically throughout your day and you will eventually get it in stock. It's not one of those 3rd party sellers either - sells directly from Walmart itself. I have mine on order. I'm selling my 12.9" 2018 and looking forward to getting back to the 11" size. Having that 8 GB RAM will be nice too.

Generally I agree with the sentiment, I just wanted to mention that I did this exact thing--got the air 4 when the air 5 came out (from Decluttr, even) with some mixed results. I got an apple pencil from them for $80 and it looked brand new, so that was great. The ipad, on the other hand, was totally messed up. It was dead out of the box so I plugged it in, did the setup and all once it revived, without thinking anything of it. But it never charged after many hours and would die if I unplugged it, making it rough just to get back into it so I could erase my account info before sending it back. Sending it back was a hassle because at first they said they would try fixing it first and issuing a refund only if they couldn't fix it, rather than simply issuing a refund on receipt of the return. Fortunately I was able to ask for that and they agreed, so it definitely could have been worse. But I ended up getting the 5 instead, partly because I didn't want any more waiting or hassle, and partly because I suspected that the M series would start getting exclusive updates and features soon. Kind of a gamble either way, but that was just my experience. In the future I would probably go apple refurb or something like an Amazon with easy returns. Or try and find something local that I can actually inspect before buying. For a moment there I thought I was going to have to wait who knows how long for either the repair or the refund.

Even gaming a little. And I still think it has more to give, so I even recently invested on a new Smart Keyboard for it, since the first original one stopped working. And life goes on! @@the_wiki9408 Optimizing macos to run natively on the ipad(and apple taking full responsibility for the experience) while keeping mac purists on laptops and desktops isn't easy. Touch friendly targets just aren't going to make people on a new studio and studio display happy. Just putting in the api and letting app developers deal with trying to shoehorn a desktop experience into the ipad though is much less risky for them. Just like they let remote desktop apps in the store, but don't make their own. @@jonpcostello Understandable, but they've already done the opposite and allowed iPad apps on MacOS with a bad keyboard and mouse alternative for touch input. So offering an equally poor experience the other way as well at least gives us choice. I suspect most would want the fancy apple keyboard w/ touchpad for using desktop software anyway. Maybe Apple makes it a requirement and then it can be a way for them to extract more money from us. Also, the same would apply for allowing virtualization you mentioned above. I got 4 years out of the last one and expect, unless Apple gives me a major compelling reason, I'll get another 3 out of my M1. The only thing that might change that is if if they do a huge overhaul to the OS and make it more Mac-like... that being said though the M1 Air is still a phenomenal system so I can't see even a more robust iPad OS putting too much of a drain on the M1. Yeah totally agree. The 2018 12.9” iPad Pro still amazes me. Accidentally smashed the screen a year ago. Apple down here in Australia charge AU$1096 for the screen repair. I found a refurbished with double the storage for AU$1049. Done. Just a great value device. ProMotion is the key feature that makes even the old ones seen snappy… A12X still great for 95% of tasks.

iPad’s biggest problem remains its software. As long as it’s hobbled by Apple’s weird restrictions and OS choices, plus the locked App Store, it’s never going to fully take advantage of any of the new hardware that Apple puts into it. Seeing M1 in the Pro last year with little to show for it hammered home how stagnant the iPad has become as a platform for software.

Im still rocking my 2019 and it does all i need it too. The battery is starting to die though and isn’t holding a charge as well as it used to BUT it lasted longer than all my previous generations.

Same for me but with the 2018. Still a fantastic device but the battery does go quick.

New battery is $99 installed at the Apple store. Local shops can often do it for less. The one by me asks $69. If you just need battery, that’s cheaper than an upgrade!

my ipad is from 2012 the iPad 3, still using it every day. it slowed down because of the internet that changed, and the Os is too old to get updates for youtube app for example. this wont happen with M1. battery is still like first day even after a decade. maybe you should get an apple charger and cable or whatever oyu are using. seems strange the battery showing signs already for such a young device.

I'm the original owner of an IPad 3, I must have dropped it at least 100 times without any external rubbery protection, the edges are a bit tented, battery still good. It won't update but still works, it's priceless to me.

Easy solution to makes people buy the New iPad: put an headphone Jack, sdcard slot, 4 Thunderbolts, and a real os instead of a toy software that is not even capable of copying files without errors...uh i was almost forgetting...make it right to repair compliant.

I've got an 11" iPad pro from 2018 (bought in 2019 from Amazon for $714.00). Nothing I see at the moment tempts me to upgrade. But if (as I was at the time) someone is sitting on an old big-bezel baseline model (BBBM), this new iPad Air would be a good upgrade. And there's something to be said for buying new. I buy a lot of refurbished products so I have no problem with buying old or used. But there is something to be said for having a brand spankin' new product. And the new iPad Air is a fabulous product (my brother just bought one). But, yes, a smart shopper can get 95% of the functionality of the newest iPads by buying an older model (new or used). Now, please give me my free gift, Luke.

I feel like you should have mentioned the battery. As an older iPad is going to have a battery with lots of its effective lifespan consumed. I still agree you with your points in general though. Of course you forget about those of us that just like shiny new things every once in a while.

off topic but why does the iPad only come with a 1M charger. they advertise it as a laptop replacement but 1M isn't long at all for a usb c charger

Hi Luke - can you please make more of this sort of comparison? It is extremly valuable to understand if devices from e.g. 2016/2017 are still recommended and how they compare with the newest generations. Apple will not like this, but I bet a majority of the users want to know what the get in terms of every day use (not benchmarks) from the generation of Apple procducts. E.g I have a iPad Pro 10.5 form 2017 and I do not know if I would feel any difference from upgrading to an iPad Air M1 .... Thank you!

I have an iPad six generation I just wasn’t able to log into it and said it’s not activated I drew on procreate and made my albums and my album covers, and I made albums on my GarageBand and watched movies with a friend with FaceTime and watched KZitem made TikTok and KZitem videos and use the iMovie to do my editing and stuff and I’m looking for something cheap and I’ve seen things $200 up to $400 or whatever and I’m looking for something that I can do all that on that’s kind of an iPad. I would like to get an iMac or MacBook Pro a cheaper one on eBay that I could do those things on as well do you think you could make a videohelping me out with these decisions

"buy the old one for less" - Exactly. Apple computers are commodities, like cars. You want a good deal on a new car? Buy last years model; clearance sales. With either, you have a year or more of other people using/beta testing the product and commenting on it. If it's a lemon, wait for next year. And the thing with Apple computers, as noted by other commenters, is the reduced prices buying Apple's refurbished products. Excellent condition and you get the full warranty too. Unless you absolutely need a brand new released today machine, just wait.

You can put a Ryzen GPU and 4 xeons, but it still runs iPadOS. It’s like having a LaFerrari and driving at 20mph. Until they put macOS in it the iPad Air/Pro simply is not a compelling offer. If I wanted an iPad to watch videos and whatnot, I’d get the $329 model.
