One of the things that helped me with getting wide mixes was having narrow parts of the song too, the perspective change of when you go from a narrow section to a wide section is a powerful tool.

Keep the center stuff VERY center, with the narrowest possible ambiences. When you boost frequencies in those instruments use a mid-side EQ - boost only in the middle. Then have one or two elements that are hard panned (guitars probably) and widen them with a mono-compatible imager. This approach creates tons of space and enormous perceived width because of the contrast in the stereo field. Other stuff I do is if I'm doubling guitars for hard panning I'll have the tones be slightly different but equal in perceived volume. Then I send them both to an aux and bring up a mid-side EQ - find the frequency range where they sound most intelligible and subtract 3 dB of that from the middle. Usually that will be around 1k, which turns out to be beneficial in creating space for the vocal too because that's generally the intelligibility range of the vocal...AND the vocal is generally dead center - so you've subtracted information that would crowd the vocal from exactly where the vocal is in the stereo field. Works great every time without sacrificing body in the guitars - in fact, it makes the guitars sound bigger. Makes the whole mix sound more spacious and three dimensional. Love your videos man, we have tons of mutual friends in town and my studio is in Brentwood. We should get a drink sometime

double tracked guitars with different guitar, amp sim and cab IR on each side is a great tip, it works a treat. I think also having some element in the mix shift there pan with automation or whatever or a roll across the toms of the drum kit even really highlights the width to your ears. Building different synth sounds on each side is a great one... thanks

I'm not a sound engineer, just a musician, but in my opinion if EVERYTHING is wide in a track we loose the width. Something have to stay in a narower position, so we can feel the contrasts, the different ranges, etc... You can also do this old trick which is being narow during 1 or 2 bars, at a signifiant moment in your composition, then opening the width, like a theater curtain Width is a little bit like loudness, if everything is loud nothing is loud. So, beware with hard paning everything, mid-side EQ everywhere, spreaded delays, and a stereo widener on the top of all. (and I don't mention the phase issues which can occure when we put to much on everything...)

Awesome video! Another nice technique is to process a stereo recording using m/s and apply a filter with resonance to the side but not mid. If you do it correctly, and assuming I'm explaining it correctly, you get a very nice center "phantom mono speaker" and the stereo width edges will seem to almost sparkle and really come to life. Compare this to using the same filter on a stereo image is like night and day, again assuming you get the settings and routing correct.

@ColtCapperrune

So Vocalign is really useful for lining up doubles and harmonies to the lead vocal. But as far as guitars go, if I’m playing guitar I just get it right, if I’m producing a guitarist, I make them play until it is as close as they are capable of playing it. And then I might cut and nudge a few things. But that’s all I ever do for guitars. I find any sort of time stretching sounds terrible on acoustic instruments. Hope that helps!

Cheers from Texas! this video has been on my list since what? oh, yesterday! it's that important, to me, to get knowledge from these Sages of Sound, while the fruit is ripe! ok, got my coffee, and my schedule changer... phone 😉 DISCLAIMER I'm one of those people who makes sure, the class is NOT boring... in a positive manner; of course. point of insert: Double Tracking!!?? Seriously? ok, ok. Sounding like Chad Smith, I feel like screeeamin"!! ...when people ask why they should do that and more. then, i breathe and gather my wit (remembering how little attention i gave people, at insert age) we don't all learn at the same pace. heck! we don't all learn during the same lifetime, lol, much worse, a decade or two. what? well, the information focussed on during different time spans is, given out differently. sorry.... The best stuff has to be repeated over and over; to reach different age groups. we know things in different ways, and not necessarily functional. as humans, we need to hear it and see it accomplished by various humans; to know what we are truly capable of... ...in this wide world of sound harnessing. phew. 😜 it's PARAMOUNT important, to budget tracks based on old school, stereo style, double tracking; at a minimum. NOT copy and paste. did you sing it twice? com'on ... it's simple different enough to activate the hemispheres of your brains to pay attention more to the music lol is this a 101 Class? as CC may attest, it's fun to discuss this ...because it DOES feel great; to figure something out. It feels even better: to hear of positive results from others; skipping the hard-work part. I'll listen more and make more comments in a few, if that's cool guys... peace

Hey Colt, have you ever explored the trick of duplicating say a guitar track for example, flipping the phase on one of the guitar tracks and then panning hard left and right? you get super wide spread but also with a warmth in the middle too. It sounds unreal in the right context...
@ColtCapperrune
2 жыл бұрын
So that is a technique I personally would not recommend. In terms of the sonic characteristics, it feels like my brains are getting sucked out of my ears lol. But more importantly than that when you duplicate something and flip the phase on it without making any other changes, that instrument or element can no longer collapse to mono well. So while I don’t mix in mono, and generally I don’t care that much about mono, doing something like this will make that instrument completely disappear in mono. I would recommend just doing some experimentation with this and finding something to give you a similar result to what you like without hurting the mono compatibility. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

@@ColtCapperrune awesome! I do prefer double tracked instruments for stereo width but this is mainly something I would use if I got sent a track with only 1 guitar and I wanted to make it wide, either that or pan the mono track slightly left and send it it a tape slap that is panned in the opposite direction. To be honest I just love experimenting with these techniques and seeing the outcome haha!
@ColtCapperrune
2 жыл бұрын
Next time you get something sent with only one guitar track, tried duplicating it, pitching it up or down a couple cents, nudging it back or forward 15 or 20 ms, add saturation, and whatever other effects you want. You might be able to get it to a place where it doesn’t feel like the phase has just been switched.

Hey! I use a waves plugin (S1 Imager) to get incredible stereo width, but it doesn’t retain volume/fidelity when in mono. Any tips?
@ColtCapperrune
2 жыл бұрын
That’s the problem with widening plug-ins, is it’s using phase trickery to make things feel wider, so they usually will do worse collapsing to mono. So that’s why I use all of these techniques, including the comment that I pinned above, and then just barely touch it with the stereo Widener. A bad arrangement always equals a bad mix. By that I mean if the total balance is not properly adjusted by the music arranger, the sound engineer who mixes the project is always going to be pulling his hair out. Instruments are instruments and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. If you haven’t done your homework and understand the nuts and bolts of arranging music, the mix will always suffer.
