Sometimes I like to think at how much of a technical and artistic marvel the Peanuts film ended up being. Characters move exactly like they do in 2D, and it was a massive selling point for me personally as someone who knows a lot about the process of 2D animation but next to nothing about 3D. Can't wait to see how far 3D can go, and stuff like this makes me really intrigued to learn it.

Yes! Loved that movie and its animation and art direction so much! I really wish we got more movies with a similar look. The last ones we got in that vein were Captain Underpants (which I adore and is genuinely so masterful with it's animation and visuals) and the Spongebob movie (which I did not actually watch but the trailers looked amazing) and that's such a shame because it's honestly a super appealing look. I'd love to see original IPs animated in those styles.

I feel like what makes your faux-2D so effective is that you don't try to deny that you're using a 3D model. I feel like so many toon/anime 3D can't reconcile that 2D and 3D animation are so very different as mediums. Animation is all about the illusion of life, and sometimes a convincing illusion comes from breaking the hell out of polygons in Maya until you get something that mimicks 2D effectively.

I personally love how you keep trying out 2D style animation in 3D. 3D animation seems to be all the rage these days, but for most of its life it seems like it’s just been trying to be a stylized version of real life. Fortunately, recent movies like Bad Guys, Mitchells vs The Machines, and Into the Spider-Verse (ESPECIALLY Into the Spider-Verse; that film is absolutely GORGEOUS) have been bringing some of that 2D charm into 3D animation. I hope we can start seeing even more of what makes 2D animation so special incorporated into 3D animation in the future.

Yo, this is dope!! I've also considered realtime rendering of stylized characters in a 3D space, but it's much more of a programming-based approach than an artistic one. Basically, each character is reduced to key "nodes" that denote details such as the top and sides of the head, the eyes, the hands, etc., and every frame, the camera captures the locations of these nodes as they'd be seen in the frame. Then, an algorithm uses this "node map" of the character's features as a reference to draw the character using vectors, which is then rasterized. I'm sure the result wouldn't be anywhere close to passable for traditional media, but I think it would be great for realtime applications such as video games.

Can be done in Blender with moderate difficulty using Geometry Nodes. It will need 3 head versions for the angles with same set of regular shape keys (left to right shapekey mirroring can be automated, front have to be made manually), and then mix those head shapes together using Geometry Nodes - based modifier (needed to recreate shape key effect with object references as shapes). Automate angle using drivers optionally
