How about we kill two slimes with one stone; have an end game quest where the player character can replace Lewis as mayor, after which, Lewis can start dating Marnie for real? I mean, the player character basically becomes the entire economy of Pelican Town by the end of the game anyway, so mayor is honestly the next logical step. Lewis could be upset at first, but get over it when he realizes a lot of responsibilities are no longer his, and he is free to pursue Marnie to his heart's content. It could even have a few extra tasks for the player, to give them just a little more to do outside of their increasingly automated and industrialized farm.

The case with Alex is so interesting to me, because I (male) remember telling some of my female friends I was planning on marrying Alex in one of my playthroughs and they were like, ew, Alex? Why him? And I was surprised by that response at first, but learning how differently he treats the farmer based on whether you’re a male or female farmer means some people are going to have a drastically different impression of him than others, which I find so interesting. I also agree that both outcomes feel pretty realistic for his character which makes him more compelling, though I also see why it can lead people to thinking he’s significantly better as a male farmer than a female farmer lol

I have fun by planning out my Stardew day on what I can do before and after interacting with certain characters. It can take me a whole year just to reach the bottom of the mines. Instead of removing/changing existing characters to show time passing, which can feel like a punishment, the game could add characters in subsequent years. Like Kent returning home, the added egg fest dialogue or the trash bear, you could be rewarded for continuing to play. You can account for the way the houses don't have empty space now by having Robin build an upstairs or add-on to houses to add space for townfolks's family, or build a new house (maybe near Marnie and Leah?) (I would say that someone could move into the place a bachelor vacates, but that doesn't feel right) I love the ideas about Sebastian moving out and continuing to visit and stuff like that, but it makes more sense as opt-in content like a dlc or mod.
@WitchyGeek

Given that almost every marriageable character lives in other people's homes except Leah and Elliot, it would be kind of weird to have other people move in instead. I could see Haley getting a new roommate (who else would clean everywhere else apart from under the cushions if Emily moves out?! 😯) or Emily because it gets too quiet and she has an entire house just to herself, and either getting someone new in Leah's or Elliot's cottage or being able to do something fun with them would be really cool. But Abigail's room is one of the only private spaces in a house that the whole town has access to because of the shrine, Sam's is the biggest room in a house that still has three people after he leaves, Penny lives in her trailer with her mom etc., so in those cases it would seem kinda strange. Although, I guess I could see Jodi renting out Sam's room for extra cash. She mentions shopping at Joja because it's cheaper even though she doesn't think it's the best for her family and with his heavy PTSD Kent doesn't seem to be able to add much to the family finances (or general running of the family and doing chores), instead basically just being another mouth to feed. I guess the main problem with utilising previous abodes of one's spouses is just that - the possibility of divorce and marrying someone else. What happens to the new person living there if they come back because you divorced them? Or, conversely, what happens to your now former spouse if someone else is now living in their old home? Totally could be done, but it would be a lot of work to implement, I expect.

On the community center rewards: You can't count the movie theatre, Ginger Island, or the Wizard's ink quest as rewards for it, because those also happen when you do the Joja Route. On Time moving on in the valley: I think it would be interesting to have a system like Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. You have 7 in game years where things progress, your kids grow up, people change, and after the "ending" you can play forever in a time locked city. That gives plenty of time for a playthrough to feel like it's not stagnant, while letting a slower player unlock everything with no time limits. That said, it definitely would be better as a mod, rather than a base game thing.

I mean, yes and no regarding the Community Centre I suppose the CC-exclusive rewards aren't plentiful, but I'm not sure they need to be? It's less expensive, faster, and offers 2 tangible unique rewards, one of which is kind of meh, (Cola dispenser) and the other is easy access to auto-petters, which only come from treasure floors in the caverns otherwise.

I think the idea is that he'd be able to more effectively operate in bulk, as he's also now getting the business JojaMart used to get. If he's buying twice as many seeds from his suppliers, he can get a discount, which he can (partially) pass on to customers. More realistically, I think Pierre would leave his prices unchanged and keep the difference as profit, and nobody would notice or care.

The funny thing about the fantasy-esque setting to me is the dialogue that doesn't change around characters not believing in it. Specifically, Shane talks about believing in science, and I'm like, my guy, you're married to me. We have junimos working on the farm. What are you talking about?

9:54 I would tie it to some kind of progression rather than time. Like how harvest moon has "canon" pairings that get married as your befriend them unless you specifically pursue one of them enough to beat your competitor out (at least Tree of Tranquility had this, not that it ever came up for me given my apparently bad habit of so heavily prioritizing the person I'm trying to romance that I forget that rivals even exist most of the time). Maybe characters can move out, but it's more related to screwing up a relationship than time passing. It does risk the game world feeling too player centric, but I'd say that's a risk worth taking.

What bothers me the most is that a lot of players have zero tolerance to the traits that make the characters seem so real. This only reinforces the idea that people need to be perfect in order to be worth it when perfection doesn’t even exist. Also, please stop with the “you can’t fix Shane”. Of course we can’t fix him, he doesn’t even need to be fixed to begin with. People with mental health problems want to be loved and accepted just as much as everyone else.

4:40 Uh... I don't how a lack of competition works. With Joja there, Pierre probably kept his prices as low as he could manage in a desperate attempt to compete with theirs. Realistically his prices would actually _increase_ slightly or stay the same. If you wanted a positive consequence, his slightly increased absolute profit (as opposed to relative profit) could mean he could afford to stay stocking some new things that Joja had previously been the only supplier for. Note, I'm talking purely in terms of lore, not gameplay, I'm not sure if Joja actually supplied anything he didn't aside from their corporate products.

I am honestly pretty dissatisfied by Pierre choosing to work more once you finish the Community Center. I wish instead that he would have hired the guys that worked at Joja to watch the store while he spent weekends with his wife and daughter, letting them become a more functional and close family. And on top of that, due to the increase in business and extra help, he could then lower his prices and expand his stock. That way the expanded stock is a reward from the CC rather than a Qi reward. And on top of that, the extra money would help them afford better things and we could see the holes disappear in their clothes for their portraits. And once Joja is gone, there would be more opportunities for personal businesses. Would love to see other people in the Valley open up small businesses of their own that gave you access to some hard items easier in the late game. We would get to see the Valley grow organically without Jojas shadow. And none of that would happen if you go the Joja route. My Dad told me that small towns fought to keep WalMarts from moving in because they kill local business and stop growth in small areas. Joja surely did the same.

It happened in my country too over the last I think 10-15 years. I'm from a big city, but when I was a kid (00s) we had a lot of small local shops, but most of them ended up closing bc of bigger chains. It always made me sad because of nostalgia and how local shops always had more interesting and unique stock you can't find anywhere else. So more local shops opening would be amazing! Like if Emily opened a small clothing shop or Caroline having her own tea stand or something.

I think it’d be cool (or more realistic rather) for Pierre to increase prices after Joja leaves. Pierre is shown to be greedy in general, and the town only puts up with him since his store is one of the few gathering areas (aside from the library/community center) and since he is the only place to buy food if Joja leaves. If given power/influence, I could see Pierre wanting an empire similar to Joja, the only thing stopping him is just the fact that he’s in the valley. Perhaps this could give a heart event where the player/town talk some sense into him, since let’s be honest, it would give the player base a major sense of catharsis

Glad people seem to be coming around on cheats/help mods. Absolutely fine if someone doesn't want them! But I stopped playing for a long while because I felt guilty for not doing 100% legitimate normal playthroughs and losing steam on them pretty quickly, and only through adding some cheats did I finally go and start to enjoy the game without stressing. I could never fish all because my RSI (repetitive strain injury) meant the rapid clicking for the fish minigame hurt my arm. Now, I just have that part auto complete. Is it cheating? Am I denying myself a central core part of the game? Sure! But I'd rather not be in pain for the next day and a half because I play. And even without injuries, disabilities, or other stuff, who cares? Sometimes I just wanna spawn in some decorations to make my farm look nice.

I think for the topic of having characters actually aging over time it'd work best as an all or nothing. having only some of the characters age up to adulthood and then just stop would be odd, unless the game is secretly about a vampire village where people only get turned after they pass childhood. the community centre reward being lackluster and festivals not being worth redoing aren't controversial opinions imo.

I exclusively shop with him not because it's anti Joja, but because he really is just trying to keep his shop running AND family fed in a town of less than 50 people! He buys your goods for a fair price and sells at a price that's reasonable for him. You know what? He's also charming in his own way. He does genuinely care for what could be his illegitimate daughter and tries hard for his family. An honest man just trying to make a living. Overhated for the meme. 4:40 Pierre is a capitalist, if Joja goes out of busniess, his prices go up, not down, because he no longer has a competitor and you have to buy from him, he has a monopoly on selling seeds in the valley. A lot of his dialogue is about how he can't compete with Joja Prices so people chose his shop over Joja. Competitors are bad for businesses and good for consumers, the farmer is a consumer, arguably we don't benefit from Joja leaving, only Pierre does. I'd actually like to see more stuff that shows Joja being good for the valley. Stop blaming them for every fault, make Joja prices cheaper then Pierre's so we have a reason to want to shop there. I would actually love a 3rd Route where we act as a mediator between Joja and the Valley, and we can have the best of both worlds, we get both the community center, and Joja. They'd have to add a 3rd spot for the movie theater, but I think its doable, there are a few spaces that don't really have anything, like the route that goes from the farm to the mountain. 10:30 I think you're focusing too much on the part of the comment about Sebastian Moving to Zuzu. Having the children grow up, and adding a few more children would be BIG. You can place it deeper in the timeline, Year 4 or Year 6 perhaps, but he's right, the town feels frozen in time. Maybe to circumvent deadlines, the Wizard has something that allows you to rewind the time in the NPCs, unage the children, and make Sebastian move back, etc. Alternately, they could offically add Zuzu city, and Sebastian can move, and you can go to Zuzu City to visit him. But I also agree, hardline stop before killing characters, or removing them permenantly. Stardew is a fun happy game, I don't want to go to a Funeral, and I bet concerned ape wouldn't want to write the dialogue for one either. "You can cheat in a single player game" is also an ice cold take. The hot take (or should I say, Idiotic) is that cheating in a single player game where you don't effect anyone except yourself, is morally wrong to other people, somehow.

I dont really think i'll ever do it, but its fun to think about what could change. like for example, in base game, its implied that seb and abigail like each other romantically at least somewhat, but stop once you get close enough with one of them. but if you don't get close with them they never start dating. i think part of an issue a lot of people have with the game is that the world only changes where you the player touch it, so like, if they do change, do they get together? does one stay single if you get with the other, or do they end up with someone else, like if seb marries the player then maybe abigail gets with sam? but if that happens then does penny end up with anyone? or are their goals more important to them? and you can run this idea through for each character, even the non romancable ones. each change results in a cascading affect on the other characters. also the thing you said about half the bachlors leaving the valley empty, i kinda think it could be interesting if new people moved in, like leaving your hometown and coming back to find new people living in your old house, but thats also probably controversial. idk its something i think about a lot

Does Seb like Solarian Chronicles because tabletop games are fun or does he sometimes think about going on an actual adventure because that’s normal in the valley? Does Harvey brew his own elixirs or are there tomes in the museum that he’s uncovered? Do monsters never stray down from the mines into town? New dialog, even one or two lines per year in general, and one per town event, would be absolutely awesome, for me. Then after, say, 5 years pass and new lines are unlocked, they randomize so it's at least never the same town routine every year. I don't need new objects (thought more or randomized prizes at the fair would be welcome,) I'd just love gaining variety in talking to the residents. Also, game that will turn my human children into birds on a whim without need of a mod, just let me date Kent. He doesn't need to get divorced or move out or change anything else at all, just make this a thing my farmer can officially do for my depraved character crossover desires. A few characters occasionally visit it (messing up their schedules) but you can't play any games in it, there's no events for it, you can't even use the kitchen and pantry you built! They could at least have added a mechanic to leave snacks in the pantry to slightly increase friendship with random villagers or to put more money in the safe to unlock some small improvements of minigames.

Granted, that's because I'm in the middle of a challenge where I can't easily or even reliably get milk or eggs, but it made me realize how odd it is that NPCs can buy groceries when you can't. Also, hard disagree on Penny. She's my go-to. Granted, she's basically just my IRL wife with different hair and a different family dynamic, which may have something to do with it. Though I can admit her 14 heart event isn't exactly great. I do however like the pirate bedroom.

I feel like there should be more events that happen with time, but maybe have it as a togglable option when making your save, and talk to the Wizard if you wanna stop time or keep it going.

I really wish Demetrius and Sebastian's relationship grew as you got to know both of them. As it stands, Demetrius has NO text even mentioning Sebastian, which is honestly very sad. Since Demetrius likes machines and sciency stuff I'd really like to see him help out Sebastian on his motorbike in a few cut-scenes, and Sebastian could possibly find an interest in science. I fell like this could also lead to him being more outgoing and deciding that he likes it in pelican town since he has more family.

I’m okay with cheating to get a prismatic shard after already getting one. I HATE skull caverns and am terrible at combat. I use one to get the galaxy sword and one for the museum. The freebie from the caldera is usually put toward one of those causes

with the fantasy point - I feel the way the game handles it also plays into a bit of one of its themes, that being the decline of the natural world as civilization expands. Pretty much all the *magic* stuff in stardew valley is either very old or ties more into the natural world. The one instance of a 'civilized' individual using magic heavily that we interact with, the Wizard, even has trouble communicating with the Junimos, as they're nature spirits. It sort of reminds me of the stories I'd come up with as a kid growing up in a rural area and exploring the woods every chance I got - that there's secrets out there, things that are supernatural and strange, hiding away from the bright lights and constant sounds of our dwellings and roads and towns.

as far as festivals, new dialogue each year would be cool, but a good (and probably easier) change would be if once you get married, your spouse has unique dialogue/walks around with you. it seems weird to me to got to an event separate from someone you live with, say one thing to them, and then wander around on your own. I also wish you could call the shopkeepers over when they’re in the store but not behind the counter. marnie and her damn microwave, pierre and ~stocking the shelves~. like at that point just lock the door if you’re not going to be helping customers!

I just wanna say how much I appreciate you, I get a lot of guilt about playing games with cheats, that I'm not a 'real gamer' but I don't like stress and frustration, I like to be efficient and have fun in my own way, and I just really appreciate you not judging people for how they play games, and I can't express enough how much it means to me to have such a cool guy validate me.

I found a use for the worm bin! If you do a never leaving the farm challenge with the same rules I did (aka you can leave the farm once every 10 years) you can use it for bait in crab pots. Heavily situational but still, it helped me.

In regards to the cheating thing, I definitely fall into the Alpharad category of "Grinding is cringe & cheating is based" camp when it comes to using cheat mods and the like. However, I personally come to find that going full-send makes the experience... unrewarding. I usually come up with fair rules for use of cheats, and set hard limits when using them. Say like: I can spawn in food & potions, but can't sell them or give myself more until I can make them myself and/or have an equally good item unlocked. Or: I can spawn in totems to warp me back to the farm if I go too late, or give myself rain for the following day if I wanna go to the mines that day, but I can't give myself important QoL items to mimic the same things (Giving myself bundle items for Boiler Room, or spawning the sprinklers to not worry about watering plants) All in all, cheating in a singleplayer game imo is fine, but keep it in moderation in order to not fully ruin your experience by just boosting yourself to endgame levels of power.

Initially I was so open to helping rebuild the community centre because I do love me a reward system. But then after watching it sit there like it did before being rebuilt and having nobody use it, made me realize it's exactly the reason why it got disheveled in the first place. It's for everyone's own good to put it out of its misery. Like did I really have to evict the forest spirits for this?

I think, expanding on the Jas and Vincent becoming teens comment, a romance between them develops in a "Reverse Clint-Emily" sense. Like Vincent cares about Jas because she's his friend and he cares about his friends and Jas is over analyzing everything he does for her and gets flustered when they're together

I don't understand why people hate Demetrius more than Pam. There's a cutscene of Pam losing her shit at Penny for... cleaning... Demetrius has his issues and I won't say he's a guy I could stand irl, but a lot of people magnify his flaws and ignore hers. There's probably reasons why that would make anyone reading this comment immediately hostile toward the whole point though.

Cheating in single player games is fine. Cheating in non-competitive multiplayer is ok as long as all parties agree, and have the same opportunities. My way of looking at it is "If you're only affecting your experience with it, and you're okay with it, go for it. If you're affecting other people's experience without their consent, you should be punished."

back when I first played stardew valley with absolutely 0 context about what it was other than a farming style sim, i was DELIGHTED about the casual wizard character. it was sooo sick, it felt kind of hilarious somehow, not sure what made it such a subversion for me but likewise, my friends who i've shown the game are also like "wait what there's just a wizard?!" too as one of their initial comments. did anyone else have that response?! i adore the exact level of fantasy in stardew, how it expands during your time in the valley, and how the world interacts with it, i agree with your comment about this and it reminded me of how funny it was to realize for the first time that yes this game does have magic stuff in it actually!

9:23 I think there should be an additional path. We can run for mayor against Lewis (and you’ll only win if you have high enough relationships with everyone, but running will hurt your relationship with Lewis and Marnie), and if you win then Lewis and Marnie live together and you get “custody” of Lewis’s house (which you can use for storage), and if you lose then you you take a relationship hit with anyone who didn’t vote for you, you get some new dialogue with Lewis, and we see a cut scene of lewis and marnie breaking up

My favorite MUST HAVE mod to play with that can be considered “cheating” is the Time Freeze mod. Walked all the way to Pierre’s and realized your inventory is full? Freeze time, walk back to your chests and drop everything off, then come right back no penalty. Forget your pickaxe before going to the mines? Just go back and get it. As someone who’s forgetful and a perfectionist and doesn’t want to waste any in game time I WILL reset the day over stupid stuff like that and it lets me actually enjoy playing.

I think that just a trophy for completing the community centre is apt because it's one of those things that in-lore sounds like it's done out of the farmer's goodwill, and I don't think that it should be seen as just a way to get to Ginger Island and whatnot

For the Pelican Town changes hot take, I'd kinda like a system like Harvest Moon Animal Parade. Where marriageable couples get married to each other and can start families of their own. It's triggerable by a specific requirement that takes effort so it's not timing based. If you want to marry someone, just don't become friends with their partner until you're ready to get married. The couples in Stardew valley are already kinda paired up (Alex and Hailey, Elliot and Leah, etc) but there's no way to see a satisfying conclusion to their relationships. Animal Parade even had a few options that never got married regardless. I think it would be a great way to simulate change without adding stress beyond just ageing up the kids.

My hot take: Clint deserves happiness and I want to be able to see him and Emily see each other I wouldn’t say this if I didn’t think Emily would want to date him, i just think she’s one of those people who’s super oblivious to flirting (I headcanon her as autistic ok) and she’d get along great with Clint if he knew how to actually catch her eye. I’ve never married Emily in a playthrough because I wanna see her with Clint😭😭
@witchcraft2264

He's definitely done dirty by the fact that none of his lines were changed when Emily became datable so he'll still ask you for help getting with her when you're married or dating her. I think that neither Emily nor Clint have great social skills and they probably would be happy together but I wish Emily got together with Sandy instead, or at least invited her into the valley from time to time
@christianzombievampire

@@witchcraft2264 That would be great too! Sandy does deserve to enjoy more time in the valley, she works too hard for somebody who only has at most 2 regular customers. I don't wanna see Clint's heart break more, but if it broke because Emily ended up with Sandy instead of because Emily ended up with the player, I could handle that lol
@goddeath6425

But Emily has shown no romantic interest in Clint whatsoever. She's much closer with Sandy, Shane, Abigail etc. based on her interactions. The only person she ever show an interest in is the Farmer, which makes a lot of sense since we work closely with nature and magic. Plus, she's not oblivious to flirting (she flirts with the player multiple times, and even gives us a kiss on the cheek in Clint's amethyst quest). Clint is just awkward around everyone.
